무궁화의 문헌 고찰

국문 초록

무궁화는 우리 민족의 시원과 함께해 오고 있는 꽃으로 그 유구한 시간만큼 우리 민족과의 관계도 각별할 것으로 판단된다. 본고에서는 옛 문헌에 나타난 무궁화를 시대별로 일별하여 무궁화와 우리 민족과의 관계 등 그 역사를 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 옛 문헌을 통해 무궁화는 이미 2천 5백 년 이전부터 우리 강역에 피어 있었고, 우리 선조들은 무궁화를 신성하고 존귀한 꽃으로 여겼으며, 필요한 곳에는 식재도 한 것을 확인하였다. 그리고 신라시대에 이미 무궁화가 우리나라로 국내외에 인식되어 국서 등에 근화향(槿花鄕), 즉 ‘무궁화 나라’라고 명기하였다. 그런가 하면 조선시대에는 홍단심계통의 무궁화가 널리 보급되어 있었고, 상대적으로 백단심계 무궁화는 보기 힘든 꽃이었으나 백단심계 무궁화가 보다 귀하게 여겨진 것을 문헌을 통해 알 수 있었다. 또한 일제의 침탈로 무궁화가 민족의 이름으로 수난을 겪었지만 광복구국운동의 표상으로 부각되어 국민들에 의해 자연스럽게 나라꽃이 된 것으로 보인다. 이처럼 무궁화는 ‘신의 꽃’, ‘나라의 꽃’, ‘희망의 꽃’, ‘백성의 꽃’등으로 자리매김하며 우리 민족과 관계를 가져온 것으로 판단된다.

영문 초록

Mugunghwa seems to be the flower which has been closely connected to the Korean history and culture by and large, that being so the relation between the Korean people and the flower would be considered distinctive. The aim of the study is going to examine the endemic relation between Mugunghwa and Korean ethnic group by tracking the historical documents referring to the national flower. Mugunghwa firstly appeared alongside the rivers of the country over 2,500 years ago according to the historical literature, the Korean ancestors considered the flower as a sacred and noble symbol, and planted them as occasion demands. Mugunghwa had already been regarded as the national flower in the Shilla era, so it is written 'Geunhwahyang', in other words 'the nation of Mugunghwa' in the credentials. According to the historical record, 'Baek-Tanshim' breed was regarded more precious in the Joseon Dynasty since Hibiscus syriacus 'Hong-Tanshim' was a nationwide-spreaded breed while Hibiscus syriacus 'Baek-Tanshim' was rarely seen. And even though Mugunghwa underwent a terrifying ordeal in Japanese Colonial Era, it soon emerged as symbol of restoration of independence in Korean Peninsula and then generally recognized as the national flower. Therefore as it's been concerned, Mugunghwa has successfully been establishing itself as 'Heavenly Flower'. 'the Flower of Hope', 'the National Flower', and 'the Flower for People', and been an intimate ethnic symbol.
