질적 연구방법으로서 근거이론의 철학적 배경과 방법론적 특성에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

이 연구는 교육연구자들에게 질적 연구방법으로서 근거이론(grounded theory)에 대한 철학적 및 방법론적 지식과 이해를 제공하고자 하였다. 우리는 근거이론의 철학적 배경을 고찰하기 위하여 근거이론의 철학적 기초로 볼 수 있는 프래그머티즘(pragmatism)과 상징적 상호작용론(symbolic interactionism)의 인식론적 및 존재론적 전제들을 검토하였다. 그리고 이러한 철학적 배경에 터하여 Glaser와 Strauss가 창안한 근거이론의 원형(prototype)을 조명하고, 근거이론방법론(grounded theory methodology)의 상이한 네 가지 분기(分岐)와 쟁점들을 살펴보았다. 또한, 이 연구는 근거이론의 방법론적 특성을 포착하기 위해서 개방 코딩과 축 코딩 그리고 선택적 코딩으로 불리는 구별적인 분석절차를 명확히 설명하고, 근거이론 연구물의 질에 대한 평가준거들(criteria)을 다각적으로 검토하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 국내 교육연구자들에게 근거이론에 대한 방법론적 시사점을 제공함으로써 질적 교육연구를 위한 방법적 토대가 될 것이다.

영문 초록

The aim of this paper is to suggest philosophical and methodological knowledge and understanding of the grounded theory as qualitative research method to education researchers. For this purpose, we examined epistemological and ontological premises of pragmatism and symbolic interactionism, which has philosophical backgrounds of grounded theory methodology(GTM). Also, we examined Glaser & Strauss(1967)’s “Discovery” as a prototype of GTM, and scrutinized respective ramifications(Glaserian, Straussian, Charmazian, SA of Clarke) and issues of GTM. In addition, this paper articulates discriminative analytic procedures, such as open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. It also comprehensively examined evaluation criteria of GTM products for capturing methodological characteristics. The results of this paper will be a methodological cornerstone to promote qualitative education research through suggesting methodological implications on the GTM to education researchers.
