개태사 석조삼존불입상 조성배경 再考

국문 초록

개태사 석조삼존불입상은 936년 태조 왕건이 후백제를 평정한 후 官司에 특별히 명해 조성한 매우 의미 있는 불상이다. 이 불상을 비롯하여 개태사 조성 배경에 대한 기존 학계의 의견은 ‘후백제를 멸하고 세운 전승기념 사찰’, ‘후삼국 통일의 상징적 사찰’ 등이 논의 되었으며 이에 대해 큰 이견은 없었다. 본 논문에서는 그동안 큰 이견이 없었던 개태사 석조삼존불입상의 조성 배경을 再考하였다. 그 이유는 馬城의 위치 비정을 통해 개태사와 석조삼존불상의 조성배경에 대한 이해를 심화시킬 수 있었기 때문이다. 馬城은 태조 왕건의 군대가 일리 천에서 후백제 신검군을 대파하고 그들을 쫓는 과정에서 최후의 항복을 받기 전에 둔영하였던 성으로 알려져 있다. 마성의 위치에 대한 제 학설은 완주의 용계산성, 익산의 미륵산성, 연산의 북산성, 외성리산성을 비롯하여 거창군 일대의 峻峰과 개태사지 석축터 까지 언급되고 있는 상황이다. 마성의 위치는 크게 보아 총 6개의 학설이 제기되어 있으며, 이외에 연산의 마성에서 고려군이 아닌 백제군이 주둔한 곳으로 보기도 하는 등 다양한 의견이 개진되어 있다. 본문에서는 기존의 학설에 대한 검토와 더불어 근래에 보고된 관방유적 지표조사 현황을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 얻은 결과를 1차 사료인 開泰寺華嚴法會疏와 비교하는 과정을 거쳐 그동안 이견이 많았던 馬城의 위치를 근래에 새롭게 보고된 개태사 주변의 토성으로 추정하였다. 이와 같은 분석을 통해 개태사 주변의 토성이 태조 왕건군이 후백제 신검군을 쫓을 때 마지막으로 머물렀던 둔영지 였음을 알 수 있었다. 후백제 신검군은 일리천 전투에서 대패한 후 지금의 연산 부근까지 후퇴하였다. 이곳에서 전열을 가다듬은 후 왕건군과 최후의 일전을 겨루고자 하였으나 이미 패색이 짙은 후백제군은 전의를 상실한 상태였다. 이에 신검은 신료들과 더불어 마성에 주둔하고 있던 왕건에게 찾아가 항복을 청하였다. 본 논문에서는 마성의 위치를 개태사 주변의 토성임을 논증하였다. 마성이 위치와 현 개태사 석조삼존불입상이 위치한 장소의 지정학적 관계를 고려했을 때 당시 최고 지휘부인 왕건의 숙영지는 지금의 개태사가 위치한 곳이 된다. 즉, 개태사 석조삼존불입상이 세워진 곳은 왕건이 후백제 신검으로부터 항복을 받은 역사적 장소가 되는 셈이다. 이를 통해 개태사 석조삼존불입상이 건립된 곳이 바로 후백제의 항복을 받은 그 장소이며 이를 기념하기위해 왕건은 官司에게 특별히 명해 거대한 석조삼존불입상을 세운 것이라 할 수 있다. 왕건이 후백제 신검의 항복으로 마침내 후삼국을 통일한 바로 그 장소에 거대한 석조삼존불입상을 세우도록 지시한 이유는 새로운 통일왕조 고려의 국력과 신국가 통치에 대한 자신감을 보여주고자 하는 정치적 의도가 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Gaetaesa(開泰寺) was built by the order of Wnag Geon(王建) who was the founder of the Goryo(高麗) Dynasty in 940, four years after defeating the Later Paekje here. There are many articles that investigate about Gatesa and the stone Buddha triad image at Gaetaesa. Art history, archaeology and history have interest in Gaetaesa. Although those are different part, all of them agree that Gaetesa was made for commemoration of the unification of the Later Three Kingdoms. This paper investigates about the location of the fortress which name is Masenog(馬城). Maseong have importation relation with the Goryo’s last war with the Later Paekje. After Goryo’s army defeated the Later Paekje’s troops in Illichun(一利川), they chased runaway troops of the Later Paekje. Before the Later Paekje surrender, Goroy’s army were stationed in Maseong. Finally, in Maseong the King of the Later Paekje bagged surrender to Wang Geon who was the Gorey’s king. Many scholars said about the location of Maseong. However, until now there is no agreement about the place. There art 10 opinions about the location. To reveal the exact location of maseong, this paper study about the article that name is [Gaetaesahwhembupheyso(開泰寺華嚴法會疏) ｣. Wang Geon worte this article by himself to celebrate the opening of Gaetaesa. In this article, we can know that Maseong was situated near the Hawangsan(黃山) that is the old name of Yeonsan(連山). Recent archaeological research found an fortress that is made by soil wall near Gaetaesa. The finder reported that fortress was made to protect japanese invader around 15th century. By the past achievement of defence cultural relics, this paper proved that the finder’s view is wrong. Also, this paper demonstrated that the fortress is Maseong. The brief conclusion of this article is that the stone Buddha triad image at Gaetaesa was built in the exact site that the Later pakje’s King surrender to Wang Geon. In other words, the stone Buddha triad image was built in the historical and symbolic site that Wnag Geon finally achived the unification of the Later Three Kingdoms.
