접대비가 은행의 연성예산제약에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 접대비의 지출이 은행의 대출에 미치는 영향에 대하여 1992년도부터 2007년도까지 KOSPI 기업을 대상으로 실증분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 우리나라의 기업의 접대비의 지출은 부실한 기업에 대한 대출과 양(+)의 관계를 보였다. 부실한 기업에서의 접대비 지출은 단기적으로 은행대출을 증가하여 기업의 수명을 연장시키는 효과가 있었으나 장기적으로 기업성과에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나 접대비는 은행의 연성예산제약을 악화시켜 결과적으로 은행과 차입기업의 도덕적 해이를 유발하는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 따라, 접대비는 대출과 관련하여 은행의 부실대출 문제를 악화시키기 때문에 부실기업에 대한 접대비 지출에 대한 통제를 강화할 필요가 있음을 시사해 주고 있다.

영문 초록

In this study, we examine how firms’ entertainment expenses affect banks’ lending decisions using sample firms listed in the KRX between 1992 and 2007. For this study, we estimate the default risks of Korean firms with financial data and other information like ownership structure, etc, that affect corporate performance and risks. Using the predicted default risks, we performed some panel regression analyses to investigate the effects of entertainment expenses by the Korean firms during the sample period, with respect to firms’ debt financing from banks. We As a result, we find a positive relationship between firms’ entertainment expenses and loans to insolvent firms. As insolvent firms increase their entertainment expenses, banks tend to lend more money to such firms, possibly resulting in extending firms’ lives, the phenomena known as soft budget constraints or SBC. Thus, financial regulators need to better control entertainment expenses by insolvent firms because lending-related entertainment expenses can increase bad loans in banks.
