In the 17th and 18th centuries. Great Britain populated and developed colonies that became known as the American colonies By 1767 Britain had realized the increasing commercial success of these colonies and assumed a posture over the colonies that reduced them to less than British citizens, The Americans became increasingly dissatisfied with Britain’s ever-more oppressive laws designed to deprive the Americans of their status as citizens From America and its great leaders came a nell’ resolve to free the country from tyrannical control of Creart Britain and form a new free country The Declaraton or Independence was signed in 1776 and the Revolutionary War began, It ended in victory and America had become a free nation with high ideals of freedom and democracy. Since then. America has grown and evolved in its understanding and application of that freedom and democracy, The united States of America (USA) has faced several challenges to its freedom and democracy over the past 2 centuries. In order to protect and preserve its freedom in the most severe of these challenges. America has responded by declaring war, Beginning with the war of 1812 and continuing to the present day war on terrorism. America has been consistent in its judgement of when to go to war for the sake of protecting its freedom. Throughout. history. the l$A has chosen to declare war when the core of its national identity has been threatened It has acted in those wars to defend that which is so crucial to its founding and identity. and to its survival as a nation of free people. This is still true today and was true in America’s response to the terrorist attacks on the World ’Prado Center Towers in New York and on the Pentagon in Washington. D. C. America’s declaration of war on terrorism following the September 11th terrorist attacks is an act consistent with its foundational ideology to protect its freedom and democracy. which forms the cornerstone of the nation’s birth.
