영문 초록

The representative characteristic of the American satiety is a great extent of social diversity. The United States included seeds of social fission in the nation building process. The centrifugal forces of social diversity were held back until the cady twenty century However, for the past couple of decades societal and academic concern has been increased about the detrimental effects of social diversity in the country. In this paper major mechanisms to produce the social diversity or to chip away the social solidarity in the current American society are discussed. Race and ethnicity, family. labor market and inequality. value systems are those fields. Concerning rate and ethnicity, the social contrast and discrimination between the White and African American are the major dividing line to threaten the social solidity. Concerning family. increasing participation of women in labor markets created a new environment to make the traditional type of family to be maladjusted. Concerning labor market and inequality. increase in temporary work and harsh market competition widened inequality further to lay behind a large number of the disadvantaged and socially excluded. Widening inequality made the society to become marc fragile to outside or inside disturbances for any reason Concerning the value system. individualistic value orientation. became stronger as time passed. Accordingly. the minimum requisites of public good became threatened so that the society become colder and less humane in social interactions. This consisting trend of lessened social solidarity increased crime and anti-social behaviors. accordingly. social cost paved for protective measures against them. One of the sources of the strength of the American society is often indicated to be in the substantial diversity together with freedom and democracy. Keeping social solidarity along with the maximum of social diversity is the mission the American society should face squarely now. A couple of suggestions are proposed at the end of paper.
