다문화 미술교육의 현황과 대안

국문 초록

우리 사회가 본격적인 다문화 사회로의 진입을 앞둔 상황에서, 이 연구는 국내 다문화교육 및 다문화 미술교육의 현황과 문제점을 짚어보고 그에 대한 대안을 제시하였다. 현재의 다문화 미술교육은 정체성 함양을 위한 전통미술에 초점을 맞춘 동화주의적 접근이 강하고, 세계의 다양한 문화를 이해하기 위해 이루어지는 다문화 미술교육도 축제나 의식주 관련된 민속공예 등에 초점을 맞춘 기여적, 부가적 접근에 머물러 있다. 이러한 기존의 다문화 미술교육 접근은 이국적인 문화의 다양성을 나열하는 가운데, ‘타자(他者)’의 목소리가 전적으로 배제되고 그들의 현실이 반영되지 못하다는데 문제점이 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 문화적 다원주의 접근과 사회재건적인 접근을 결합한 대안적 접근을 제시한다. 이 접근은 동시대 미술품을 통해 타자의 목소리를 듣는데 초점을 맞춘다. 즉 다양한 문화집단에 속한 미술가들의 작품과 거기에 반영된 그들의 이야기와 관점을 학습하는 것이다. 그런 접근의 예로서 국내 외국인 이주노동자 예술프로젝트 팀인 믹스라이스의 영상작업과 동시대 아프리카계 미국 미술가인 카라 워커의 작품을 중심으로 이주의 경험과 그에 따른 사회적 차별과 인종차별의 경험을 다룬 수업을 제안한다.

영문 초록

Today we are about to enter the stage of multicultural society. This study examines the alternative approach to the existing multicultural art education, which has been operated in two ways: the one is assimilation approach that focuses teaching traditional Korean art for establishing cultural identity; and the other is global education that focuses teaching about diverse cultures around the world. The problem of the existing multicultural art education is that it attempts to show only exotic aspects of cultural diveristy avoiding to listen to the other and not reflecting realities in their everyday lives. Therefore, this study suggests the alternative approach in which cultural pluralism and social reconstructivism are intermingled. The approach also stresses that students listen to other’s stories and learn about artists from diverse cultural groups and their perspectives. For example, the study suggests art lessons focusing Mixrice’s work, ‘Mixlanguages’ and Kara Walker’s work, which deals with experiences of social discrimination and mistreatment towards foreign workers in Korea and displacement and racial discrimination towards the African American slaves.
