국문 초록

15세기 중엽 중세 왕국이 오스만 터키에 의해 무너진 이후, 보스니아는 1878년까지 약 400년이 넘는 기간 동안 오스만 터키의 지배를 받아야 했으며, 이 기간 동안 다양한 이슬람 문화 및 역사적 아픔을 경험해야만 했었다. 이후 1877년 러시아와 터키간의 전쟁 결과, 오랜 동안 유럽내 대표적인 이슬람 지역으로 분류되어 왔던 보스니아는 새로운 지배 제국으로써 가톨릭 국가인 오스트리아를 맞이해야 했으며, 이것은 보스니아 내 민족들에게 이질적이고 새로운 문화적 충격을 안겨주었다고 할 수 있다. 19세기 민족주의 시대를 거치며 등장한 오스트리아의 지배와 지배 정책은 보스니아 민족들로 하여금, 과거 종교에 기초한 ‘문화적 민족주의(Cultural Nationalism)’ 성향을 더욱 더 견고하게 되었고, 종교적 집단의 정치적 집단으로의 변화 속에 새로운 민족 갈등의 양상을 초래하게 하였다. 더불어, 훗날 보스니아가 제 1차 세계대전의 진원지가 되게 되는 역사적 배경을 제공하게 된다. 이러한 연구 배경을 바탕으로, 본 연구에서는 오스트리아의 보스니아 지배 과정과 당시 오스트리아에게 있어 보스니아의 전략적 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. 이와 함께 오스트리아 지배 하에서의 보스니아의 사회, 문화적 특징 및 이 당시 대두된 민족주의의 다양한 형태들을 소개하고, 오스트리아의 지배 정책이 보스니아 내 민족들에게 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 더불어, 당시 오스트리아 지배 기간 동안 보스니아에 파급된 민족주의가 보스니아 내각 민족들에게 어떻게 다가왔으며, 어떻게 투영되었는지에 대해서도 살펴보고자 한다.

영문 초록

Since the era of nationalism in the 19th century in Bosnia, the South Slavs there were compelled to differentiate amongst each other according to religion, which in turn prompted large social changes. For instance, nationalism in Bosnia stimulated the transformation of past ‘religious groups’ into ‘national groups’. As a result, Orthodox and Catholic Christians in Bosnia who had been long suffering under the domination of Ottoman Turkey began to claim Serbian and Croatian nationalist identities. In addition, nationalism in Bosnia, similar to other regions of the Balkans, led to distinctions between ‘We’ and They’ according to cultural and religious preferences. By the 19th century, the South Slavs(Slovenes, Croats) under the Hapsburg Empire (renamed the Austro-Hungarian Dual Empire after 1866) had begun to recognize their national identity through their Catholic faith. The South Slavs under Ottoman Turkey(Serbs, Bulgars, Macedonians, Montenegro...) were able to establish the foundation of their national identity through Orthodoxy. And, Bosnia was located in the middle of both national identities. With these research backgrounds, in the chapter Ⅱ, I analyze the process of Bosnia annexation of Austria and its historical meaning since 1878 which was Bosnia under the control of Austria. In the chapter Ⅲ is devoted to searching the social and cultural characteristic of Bosnia under Austrian rule, and I explain the ruling policies of Austria in Bosnia and its contents. At the same time, in this chapter, I analyze the making process of Nationalism in Bosnia and that’s influences after the Austria’s annexation 1908. Finally, in the chapter Ⅳ, I summarize how was the Bosnia under the ruling policies of Austria, and why Bosnia is called such as ‘Mosaic of Religion and Culture’.
