프루스의 소설 〈초소〉의 주인공 실리막 연구

국문 초록

볼레스와프 프루스는 19세기 후반 폴란드 실증주의 문학을 대표하는 작가로 일반적으로 인정되고 있다. 그는 바르샤바에서 발행되던 여러 잡지에 40년 동안 수많은 글을 발표하면서 당시 젊은 진보적인 지식인들에게 많은 영향을 미쳤다. 그의 첫 번째 소설 〈초소〉는 폴란드 농민해방 (1864년) 이후 폴란드 농촌과 농민의 생활을 다루고 있다. 이 작품은 폴란드 농민의 삶을 사실적으로 묘사한 최초의 소설이기도 하다. 이 소설의 주인공 유젭실리막은 당시 폴란드 농민 거의 모두가 그러하듯이 문맹이다. 그의 의식도 농민해방 이전의 상태에 머물러 있다. 그는 농민은 귀족을 무조건 존경해야 한다고 믿고 있다. 이 농촌에 철도가 건설되고 있을 때 귀족은 아무 생각 없이 땅과 집을 모두 유대인에게 팔고 바르샤바로 떠난다. 유대인으로부터 이전에 귀족의 소유였던 토지를 구입한 독일인들이 대거 몰려와서 실리막 소유의 토지를 직접 사기 위해 실리막을 회유하고 압박한다. 그러나 실리막은 “농민은 땅을 잃으면, 임금 노동자로 전락한다.”는 말을 그의 아버지와 할아버지로부터 수없이 들어 왔기 때문에 완강히 저항하며 땅을 팔지 않는다. 그가 기르는 가축들의 사료 공급원인 초지가 독일인의 손에 들어감에 따라 사료를 구할 수 없게 되자, 그는 하는 수 없이 소를 판다. 그 후 그에는 계속해서 불행이 닥친다. 두 아들 중 하나는 죽고, 하나는 구속되고, 말은 도둑맞고, 화가 나서 그가 내쫓은 머슴과 머슴이 데리고 있던 어린아이는 길에서 얼어 죽고, 집은 화재로 전소하고, 아내는 중병에 걸려서 죽는다. 절망에 빠져있던 그는 마을 사람들의 도움으로 땅이 많은 과부와 결혼하고 새로운 삶을 시작한다. 폴란드 귀족과는 달리 폴란드 토지를 외국인에게 팔지 않고 끝까지 지켰던 문맹의 농부 실리막은 본인의 의도와는 상관없이 결과적으로 폴란드 민족의 가장 중요한 자원인 토지를 수호한 인물이 된다. 당시 폴란드는 외세 지배하에 있었다. 농민해방 이후 귀족과 농민간의 갈등과 불화가 더욱 심해진 시기에 이 작품은 농민들에 대한 사회적 관심을 유도하는데 크게 기여한 것으로 평가되고 있다.

영문 초록

Bolesław Prus (1845-1912) is one of the most important novelists of the Polish Positivism. He published short pieces on various subjects in several Warsaw periodicals during more than thirty years having influence on the Polish young progressive intelligentsia. His first major novel The Outpost (Placówka, 1886) is about a Polish village after the emancipation of Polish peasants in 1864. It is the first novel to portray the peasants most realistically up to that time. The central figure of this novel, Józef Ślimak, is an analphabetic Polish peasant whose mentality has not yet been liberated from the period of serfdom. He considers that peasants should respect the noble and the rich. When in the countryside a railway was going to be built, a Polish gentry landlord who has lived in Ślimak’s neighborhood sold his land to a Jew and moved to Warsaw. The Jew brought the German colonists into the village where Ślimak lives. The Germans were keen on buying Ślimak’s land. They annoyed Ślimak by insistently asking him to sell his land to them. However, stubborn Ślimak would not sell his land. He was attached to the principle that he has learned from his father and grandfather: once a peasant loses his land, he becomes inevitably a wage earner. Additionally, like his wife Ślimak is very proud to be a landowner. Therefore, he refused to sell his land to the German settlers. However, as a result of this decision, a series of misfortunes befell to him: his second and youngest son drowned, his horses got stolen, his first son got sent to jail for beating the farmhand of the German settlers, his wife fell seriously ill, and his house burned down. During his struggle against the German colonists, he was completely isolated from his neighborhood. In desperation Ślimak considers giving up his attachment to the soil and selling the land. But as his wife on her deathbed asks him to swear that he will never sell the land, he decides to keep his word and not sell the land. Ślimak and his wife are illiterate and reluctant to accept the changing of the circumstances, but they are ready willingly to pay a good sum of money for the education of their first son. After his wife’s death he accepts the suggestion of marrying a Polish widow who has more land than he himself. At the end, Ślimak successfully defends his soil against the German colonists. Prus succeeded through his novel The Outpost in drawing society’s attention to the peasants’ role in Polish national life.
