국문 초록

아더 피콕은 원래 과학자였는데 신학을 연구하였고 신학과 과학의 문제에 대하여 상당한 기여를 하였다. 이러한 그의 역할을 인정받아 피콕은 2001년 템플턴상을 수상하였다. 피콕은 위에서 아래로의 인과론을 만유재신론과 결합하여 하나님의 행동에 관한 그 자신의 이론을 확립하였다. 결정론에 반대하여 피콕은 우리 세계의 개방성을 강조하였다. 이러한 주장은 많은 과학자들로부터 지지를 받고 있다. 어떤 모양으로든 우리는 세계내적인 원인들만으로 모든것을 설명하려 하는 과학주의에 만족해서는 안된다. 하지만 피콕은 하나님의 행동을 설명함에 있어 만유재신론을 채택하였다. 피콕은 몸과 영혼의 관계에 대해서 전통적인 이원론에 반대하여 몸과 영혼을한 가지 실체의 두 가지 측면으로 이해하였다. 이러한 이해를 하나님과 세계의 관계에 적용할 경우에는 하나님의 초월성을 제대로 확보하지 못한다. 피콕은 과정신학을 반대한다. 하지만 그럼에도 과정신학과 마찬가지로 나름의 만유재신론을 채택하고 있다. 하나님의 행동을 부인하는 무신론적인 전제를 가지고 연구하는 과학자들이 많은 현실에서 피콕은 이 세상 가운데서 바르게 하나님의 자리를 확보하려는 노력을 하였다. 다만 그의 만유재신론이 유감스러울 따름이다.

영문 초록

Even though he was originally a scientist, Arthur Peacocke studied theology and made a considerable contribution to the relation between theology and science. Because of acknowledgement of his role in this matter, Peacocke won the Templeton Prize in 2001. He established his own theory of divine action combining top-down causation with panentheism. In opposition to determinism, Peacocke emphasized the openendedness of our world. This contention drew support from many scientists. In any sense we are not satisfied with the scientism which tries to explain our world as the causes of the world only. In explaining God’s action, however, Peacocke adopted the idea of panentheism. He opposed the traditional dualism of body and soul concerning the relation between them. He took the dual aspect theory of body and soul. The application of this understanding to the relation between God and world could not confirm the transcendence off God fully. Peacocke made his objection to Process theology. Nevertheless he asserted for a kind of panentheism. Peacocke endeavored to make room for God’s action in this world in confront of the society of scientists investigating with atheistic assumptions. The only thing with which I am not satisfied is his panentheism.
