국문 초록

근대의 종교개혁 이전의 중세 교회의 개혁가들 중에는 후에 근대 종교개혁가들이 보여주게 될 사상적 특징들을 자신의 개혁이념으로 삼아 교회개혁운동을 추구한 사람들이 있었다. 그런 인물들로는 먼저 성직계급주의를 극복함으로써 <제2차 바티칸 공의회>를 예감한 인물로 인정받는 다미아니(Petrus Damiani, 1007-1072)를 말할 수 있다. 그 외에도 시대 순서를 따라 발도(Peter Waldo, 1140-1218)와 위클리프(John Wyclif, c. 1328–1384), 그리고 후스(Jan Hus, c. 1369–1415)를 예로 들 수가 있다. 위에서 말한 중세의 교회개혁가들은 루터와 칼빈을 비롯한 근대의 종교개혁가들이 보여준 개혁이념들인‘오직 성경(sola scriptura)’, ‘오직 믿음(sola fide)’, ‘오직 은혜(sola gratia)’, 그리고‘만인제사장(priesthood of all believers)’과 같은 것들 중에 일부를 자신이 추구했던 교회개혁운동의 사상적 토대로 삼았다는 점에서 일치한 다. 다미아니는‘교회와 국가의 역할 분담’, ‘교회의 동일한 구성원인 성직자와 평신도’, ‘영성 추구에서 나타난 남녀 차별의 극복’과 같은 말들로 표현되는 만인제 사장적 교회관을 보여주었다. 발도와 그의 추종자들은 성경에 근거하려는 태도와 초대교회의 정신을 회복하려는 시도를 통해 그런 개혁이념을 드러내 보였다. 위클리프는 최대한 많은 사람들에게 성경을 보급하고, 성직자와 평신도 사이의 차별을 인정하지 않음으로써 일종의 성경 중심주의를 보여주었다. 끝으로 후스는 중세에 지배적이었던 계급적 교회론을 부인하면서 교황무오설에 이의를 제기함으로써 근대의 종교개혁운동을 준비한 측면이 없지 않다. 정리해 보면 중세의 교회개혁가들인 다미아니, 발도, 위클리프, 그리고 후스는 구원을 위해 필요하다는 종교적 근거에서 주장되던 권위에 대한 복종을 그 특색으로 하던 시대 한 가운데서 계급적 교회관에 정면으로 도전하면서, 만인제사장적 교회관에 입각한 성경적 교회를 회복하기 위한 교회개혁운동에 헌신한 사람들이다. 따라서 이런 사실을 근거로 종교개혁 이전 교회개혁가들과 그들이 추구한 교회개혁운동에 대한 평가가 이전보다 더 적극적으로 이루어질 필요가 있다고 본다.

영문 초록

Damian lived in the midst of the hierarchical medieval society. Nevertheless, he thought that there must be a profound equality among the members in the Christian world, a fellowship which is not ruptured by hierarchical differentiation. His rejection of episcopal immunity was found once again in his profound intuition that the sacerdotal office demands service to one’s flock rather than domination over it. Damian’s conception of the equality between the members of Church was not differ from the idea of priesthood of all believers, which echoed in the reformed theology of Luther and Calvin. As they did, Damian quoted core verses from Paul, John, and Peter to support his own reform movement. “Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself”(1 Corinthians 6:15). “Who loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and made us a kingdom, and priests to God and his Father”(Revelation 1:5-6) “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, and a people claimed by God as his own, to proclaim the triumph of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light”(1 Peter 2:9). The equalitarianism of ‘priesthood of all believers’ might force Damian to maintain a balance of power between the radical and the moderate in Curia. But after his death, the condition of affairs has changed. Hildebrand acceded to the Pontiff as Gregory VII. And he accepted the radical and class-conscious theory of Humbert in his reign. From this time, in the medieval Catholic Church a kind of clericalism began to grow. Due to this bad condition we can see a group of reformers who acted before the reformation. Waldo, Wyclif, and Hus were the representatives for this group. They and their followers denied openly the papal power and the hierarchy of Church. And they, like Augustine or Damian, found the basis of their reforms in the Bible. Most of them, therefore, on the ground of the spirit ‘priesthood of all believers’ that comes from ‘sola scrpitura’, they sought to embody an antihierarchical and brotherly view of Church in their reforms. For this purpose they were willing to be excommunicated or burned to death. To sum up, including Damian, the reformers before the reformation not only attacked the clerical sins (simony and nicolaitism), but also devoted themselves to build an ideal Church, of which the apostles said in the New Testament. Because of this they could show the similar aspects with the reformers (as Luther and Calvin) of the reformation, and was evaluated friendly by them. Taking into this, I would say that the evaluation of reforms before the reformation is need to be more positive.
