Through the comparative study in terms of typolo~ical and technolo-gical analysis of stone tools in relation with the stratigraphical, climatical, environmental and faunal analysis on the Upper Palaeolithic culture sites of Northeast Asia, the author attempts to bring light to the fields of archaeology, Paleoanthropology, quaternary geology and paleontology in Korea. The recent excavations at the stratified palaeolithic site at Sokchang -ni, Kongju and Kulpori, Unggi have been conducted since 1963 and 1964. Systematic excavations based on scientific methods and archaeological purposes have confirmed the stratigraphic cultures of Lower, Middle and Upper Palaeolithic industries in Korea. The Upper Palaeolithic culture in Northeast Asia can be divided into five great regions, 1) Korean Peninsula, 2) Northern China, 3) Mongolia, 4) Siberia, 5) Japanese Islands. Korean Peninsula was one time Or another by land bridge to the Japanese Islands, as well as the Liotung and Shantung Peninsula; cer~tainly served as migrational channels for Upper Palaeolithic men in the Tali(Wurm Ⅱ, Ⅲ) glacial stage. In this age Korean Peninsula was a natural bridge connecting Japa-nese Islands and Kamchatka through the Aleutian Islands, to Northern Aiaska. As to he entry of Upper Palaeolithic men, some geologists believe that the Daehan strait was probably dry at the Tali glacial age (28,000-27,000 B.P., 20,000-19,000 B.P.), and the movement of Upper Palaeolithic men and fauna from Korean Peninsula to Japanese Islands was possible. It is generally understood that the Upper Palaeolithic period began at about 35,000 B.P., but other authorities take the end of the Mousterian culture period in Europe as well as the beginning of the Upper palae-olithic period at about 70,000 B.P. The Upper Palaeolithic men in Korea can hardly be different from ourselves; they were obiously direct ancestors of the modern men, and they were completely modern in physical characteristics, Homo Sapiens. There are many remains dating from this period in Northeast Asia which can be fairly dated than Lower and Middle palaeolithic periods, and successive phases of Upper Palaeolithic culture developed. The migration of the Upper Palaeolithic men from regions to regions appare tly required a considerable time, measured not in hundreds of years but in terms of millenia. The Upper Palaeolithic men had to adapt his life to the new ecologi-cal condition a considerable change has taken place in his material culture. This cultural remains' deposited during Tali glacial stage were charac -terized by a gradual but sure emergence of regional phases of culture; although fine blade implements with a variety of well defined types occured. The skulls of Upper cave of Choukoutien, Tzuyang and Liuchang in China are believe to have features of modern Mongoloid, including Korean. As for’ the stone tools in Northeast Asia, which are brought into this comparative study are those at Sokchangni and Kulpori in Korean Pen-insula, Upper cave of Choukoutien, Sjara-osso-gol, Tzuyang, Suitung-kou and Chingsuiho in China, Malta, Buret, Afontova, Shishkino and Osinovka in Siberia, h ajuku, Fukui, josudai, Sugikubo and Shirataki in Japanese Islands. Each of the sites has its unique features, but Upper Palaeolithic culture stone tools in Northeast Asia retaining natural pebble cortex which may be common in Sokchangni, Kulpori, Shishkino, Malta and Osinovka industries. It can be safely said from these implements that the excavation of Upper Palaeolithic cultures in Korean Peninsula will 'certainly shed light the comparative study on China, Mongolia, Siberia, Japanese Islands and Alaska in North America.
