The stone mound tombs, so called Jucksukchong, are burial structures with graves during Hansung period of Baekche kingdom. These kinds of burial system were constructed from the early period of Baekche kingdom to the prior to the transfer of capital city of Baekche to Ungjin 475 A.D. In this article, we tried to understand the locations and distributions of the tombs in geographical features as well as the characteristics and chronology of the tombs in historical aspects.
First, stone mound tombs were usually located at the lower river banks of Imjin river, Hantan river, North Han river, South Han river, and Kyunganchon. These geological sites of stone toms show up to the light of a valuable information concerning the burial systems of the early Baekche period. It was because of the facts that geographical distributed stone mound tombs were directly related with the cultural, political, and social behaviors and customs of Baekche people at those time.
Second, these styles of stone tomb were characterized by the square-platform grave base and slanted untreated prop stones. The construction of stone mound tombs of Baekche kingdom was inevitably related with those of Koguryo in Hwanrun and Jian, China. These similar aspects of platform style stone mound tombs indicated a close cultural exchange between Baekche and Koguryo at those time.
Third, excavation of grave goods were harden Mumun potteries, grayishblue soft potteries, iron axes, iron sickles, bronze rings, etc. But the grave goods of stone mound tombs excavated in Sukchondong were uncovered a golden necklace consisting in a thin golden plate pierced through by a golden thread, a piece of porcelain jar neck from the Six Dynasties Period of China, indicating that the kingdom of Baeche had engaged in trade activities with many Chinese dynasties.
