영문 초록

We can say that one of the most peculiar characteristics in North Korea today is that aspects of Marxism and traditional culture coexist. Therefore it seems unreasonable to consider the two factors separately. We need to approach the historical interrelationship of the two factors on the assumption that they are compounded, because the special feature of political authoritarianism in North Korea has a close relation to the traditional and cultural inheritance that has been handed down from the Joeson Dynasty. Focusing on the transmitting factors of traditional culture, I will try to consider how Confucianism, which affected the Joeson Dynasty as a political ideology, has been linked to Juchesasang, which is a political ideology in North Korea. Confucianism has firmly had a place as a governing ideology since the Joeson Dynasty to put down roots in common people’s lives. Owing to the general atmosphere that other thoughts except Confucianism were neglected, Confucianism could affect the Joeson Dynasty as the most important factor that defines the character of the dynasty. Both positive and negative factors coexist in this ideological tradition of Confucianism. This kind of trend has remained not only in South Korea but also in North Korea even after the tragic division of the Korean peninsula extending over Japanese control on the Korean peninsula. Confucianism especially has been readopted in North Korea for a theoretical basis of Juchesasang which allows an idolatrous cult of Kim Il-sung and automatic succession of power from Kim Il-sung to Kim Jung-il, Kim Il-sung’s first son. I will consider the study of North Korea’s historical academic field on the traditional philosophies of North Korea including Confucianism with the changes of the time to see how the Juchesasang appeared and changed in North Korea, as well as how the Juchesasang relates to Confucianism. In addition to that, by comparing the Juchesasang with traditional philosophy, especially with the views on human nature and morality, how the combination has supported the view on Suryung (leader) and how it has been used as a power maintenance in North Korea.
