" The Hansung Times of the Baekje Dynasty comprises the Midwest area ranging from the basin of the Imjin River to the basin of the Ansungcheon Brook in terms of space and from 18 B.C. to 475 A.D., in terms of time. The mountain fortresses at this time were distributed radically centering on the Pungnap Earthern Fortress near the basin of the Han River. A lot of fortresses were located in the citadels of traffic paths. This study will investigate the characteristics of the mountain fortresses of the Hansung Times of the Baekje Dynasty through a review of literatures and historical facts and figures. First, the Baekje Dynasty constructed mountain fortresses and wood fences against the invasions of Nakrang, Malgal, Mahan, etc. in early times. The ceaseless conflicts withthose nations became the motive power in firming the system of Baekje as an ancient nation. After that the border conflict with the Goguryeo Dynasty were made near the Imjin River and in the northern part of the Han River, which was continued till Woongjin Times of the Baekje Dynasty. The fortresses of the Baekje Dynasty were built in the process of conflicts with neighboring nations and they were developed according to the local administrative units. The nation was equipped with an administrative system centering on fortresses. Second, the fortresses of Hansung Times of the Baekje Dynasty were distributed radically centering on the Pungnap Earthern Fortress, the capital fortress near the basin of the Han River. There was one key station in each 1-3 cities or counties. In particular, large-sized mountain fortresses were concentrated in the southeastern part of the Gyonggi Province such as the Seolbong mountain fortress. The Seolsung mountain fortress, Pasa fortress, Mangyi mountain fortress, and Jangmi mountain fortress, etc. indicated that the Baekje Dynasty placed more importance on the management of the Eastern and Southern areas and of securing the water path of the Namhan River of Hansung Times. Third, the fortresses of the Baekje Dynasty were classified into four types: that is, mountain fortress, plane-mountain fortress, plane fortress, and long fortress. Among them, a wraparound-type mountain fortress is the representative type of the fortresses of Hansung Times. Major mountain fortresses including the Gomori mountain fortress, Wollong mountain fortress, Morak mountain fortress, etc. belong to the wraparound type. The Mangyi mountain fortress and the outer wall of the Jangmi mountain fortress were the valley-wrapping type. Both the inner wall and the outer wall of the Mangyi mountain fortress are the only things that belong to the complex type. The plane-mountain fortress was not found among the fortresses of Hansung Times but the fortresses located on hills have some possibility of being the plane-mountain fortress type. Fourth, fortresses of the Baekje Dynasty are classified into wood fence fortress, earthern fortress, stone fortress, and mud&stone-combined fortress, according to the construction materials. It is noteworthy that most mountain fortresses including the Wollong mountain fortress, Morak mountain fortress, Seolbong mountain fortress, Seolsung mountain fortress, and Jangmi mountain fortress, etc. were stone fortresses. The construction materials for the fortresses of Hansung Times of the Baekje Dynastywere determined by the surrounding environment as earthern fortress, stone fortress, or the mud & stone-combined fortress, and the aspects were passed down to the following dynasties. Fifth, it is noted that major mountain fortresses of Hansung Times were built centering on the peak, by utilizing natural geography of tough mountain areas. All the fortresses in which relics of the Baekje Dynasty were found are the examples and they include Gomori mountain fortress, Wollong mountain fortress, Morak mountain fortress, Jangmi mountain fortress, etc.
