조선시대 지도에 표현된 백두산에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

이 연구는 조선시대에 만들어진 고지도에 백두산이 어떻게 그려지고 서술되었는지를 살펴보고, 고지도의 백두산 표현을 분석하여 당시 사람들의 백두산에 대한 객관적 지식과 주관적 인식의 내용과 수준을 파악 하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 그리고 시기별 지도를 이용하여, 시계열적으로 백두산에 대한 인식이 어떻게 변화하였는지도 추적하였다. 그 결과, 조선시대 백두산에 대한 인식의 변화는 18세기 이후 급격하게 나타났다. 이것은 정계비 건립 등 국경문제의 논의 과정에서 백두산이 지닌 실질적이고 상징적인 의의에 관심을 가지게 된 데 따른 것이었다.

영문 초록

Based on a review of old maps, this study analyzed the people of Joseon’s perceptions of Mount Baekdu. The study began with an analysis of how Mount Baekdu was drawn and described in old maps. Second, by analyzing the depictions and descriptions of Mount Baekdu in old maps, this study delved into the nature and extent of the people of Joseon’s objective knowledge and subjective perception of Mount Baekdu. Third, based on a chronological approach to old maps, this study traced how the perceptions of Mount Baekdu changed over time. As a result, a significant change in the prevailing perception of Mount Baekdu began to emerge during the eighteenth century. This development was in large part the result of the added attention to the actual and symbolistic significance of Mount Baekdu during the process of discussing a border between Joseon and Qing, in the form of the establishment of demarcation stone.
