미르체아 엘리아데 환상소설의 문학적 의미

국문 초록

미르체아 엘리아데(1907-1986)의 환상문학은 그의 삶 전체적으로 살펴볼 때 그의 종교학적 경험과 무관하지 않다. 엘리아데의 환상문학을 이해하기 위해서는 그의 종교현상학, 방법론, 해석학과 그것에 관한연구가 병행되어야 한다. 현대의 인류는 계몽주의 전통의 합리적, 자연주의적, 과학적인 방식으로 살아가기 때문에 비종교적이고 지극히 비신화적이다. 그러나 우리가 이런 신화적이고 종교적인 것을 배제하고 살아간다면, 현대의 무의식과 환상, 꿈, 이데올로기, 폭력과 전쟁 등의 현대의 다른 현상들을 똑바로 이해할 수 없을뿐더러, 현대인류와 현대 세계를 성찰할 수 없을 것이다. 이런 맥락에서 엘리아데의 환상문학은 현대 인류에게 감춰져있던 또 다른 세계를 열어주는 빛의 역할을 한다. 엘리아데는 종교학자이지만 결코 그의 문학을 종교학에서 영감을 얻었다거나, 신화에 관한 자료들이나 신화의 상징적 의미들을 의도적으로 사용했던 적은 없다. 그러나 엘리아데는 자신의 문학을 평범한 일상에 속하는 우주를 바탕으로 형상화된 세계이면서, 동시에 공간과 시간에 대한 개인적인 특별한 경험으로 인해 구별되는 우주에 대한 주관적 개념을 종합시킨 것으로 정의하였다. 그의 문학은 엘리아데의 풍요로운 개념을 발전시키는 데 커다란 공헌을 했으며, 결국 그의 문학과 종교학은 서로 연관되어 현대 인류의 속성과 처한 상황을 이해하고, 과거 영적인 역사에서 무엇이 가장 중요하며 가치 있는지를 구체화하는 의미의 문화적 갱신의 중요성을 일깨워준다. 그는 제임스 조이스처럼 작품들을 직관에 따라 드러냄의 언어로 표현하지만 주로 미로와 같은 독특한 문체를 즐겨 썼다. 엘리아데는 작품 속에 루마니아에서 발생한 역사적 비극을 다루면서, 그것을 환상적 소설의 형식으로 나타내고 더 나아가 '창조적 해석학'이라는 방법을 통해 한층 더 가치 있게 만들었다. 즉 이러한 방법은 그의 소설과 마찬가지로 일상 한가운데 존재하는 성(聖)을 드러내는 작업이며 결국 그가 추구하는 절대성을 인정하는 길이라 하겠다.

영문 초록

Mircea Eliade (1907-1986)'s fantasy literature is not irrelevant to his religious experience in his whole life. In order to understand Eliade's fantasy literature, one should study first hermeneutics, then phenomenology and methodology. The modern human being is very non-mythological and non-religious because he lives in the tradition of rational enlightenment, in a naturalistic, and scientific way. However, if one lives in a world that exclude these kind of religious and mythological things, he can not understand other modern phenomena such as the unconscious, dreams, ideology, violence and also will not be able to reflect the modern world. In this context, fantasy literature of Eliade plays an important role to open another world, a world that is hidden to modern human. Eliade is a religious scholar, but his literature was never inspired from religion. Also, he has never intentionally used the material or the symbolic meaning of myths. Eliade defined his literature as the manifested world in the basis of the universe, which belongs to common life. Simultaneously, it is defined as the total subjective concept that is distinct due to the personal experiences in both space and time. His literature contributes to develop Eliade's own concept, and as his literary and religious studies are related to each other, it reminds us to understand the situation of modern human and the importance of cultural renewal that was most important and valuable in the our spiritual history. He usually wrote in the literary style, like a labyrinth, in accordance with his intuition. While Eliade deals with the historical tragedy in his works, he represents the fantasy, and made his writings more valuable through 'creative hermeneutics'. In other words, these methods as well as his novels represent the manifestation of the sacred, which are actually the way to acknowledge the absolutes that Eliade had sought continuously throughout new humanism.
