이병주 문학의 역사의식 고찰

국문 초록

이 글에서는 작가 이병주의 소설과 그 역사의식이 어떤 경로를 통해 형성되었으며 그 경향과 의미가 어떠한가를 검토한 다음, 이를 전체적인 문맥 아래에서 조감할 수 있도록 그의 작품세계 전반의 전개와 문학적 인식의 방식 및 유형을 살펴보았다. 그리고 이러한 역사의식을 드러내는 대표적 장편소설이자 유사한 성격을 가진 장편소설들의 출발을 예고하 는 첫 작품 󰡔관부연락선󰡕을 중심으로 그 역사의식의 발현과 성격적 특성을 점검해 보았다. 그와 같은 경로를 통해 살펴본 바와 같이, 작가 이병주의 소설에 나타난 역사의식은 우리 문학사에 보기 드문 강렬한 체험과 그것의 정수를 이야기화하고, 그 배면에 잠복해 있는 역사적 성격에 대해 이를 수용자와의 친화를 강화하며 풀어내는 장점을 발양했다. 주지하는 바 역사 소재의 소설은, 실제로 있었던 역사적 사실을 근간으로 하고 거기에 작가의 상상력을 통해 소설적 이야기를 덧붙이는 것인데, 이러한 점에서 이병주의 소설과 그 역사의식은, 한국 근대사의 극적인 시기들과 그 이야기화에 재능을 가진 작가의 조합이 생산한 결과라 할 수 있다. 이병주의 문학관, 소설관은 기본적으로 ‘상상력’을 중심에 두는 신화문학론의 바탕에서 출발하고 있으며, 기록된 사실로서의 역사가 그 시대를 살았던 민초들의 아픔과 슬픔을 진정성 있게 담보할 수 없다는 인식 아래, 그 역사의 성긴 그물망이 놓친 삶의 진실을 소설적 이야기로 재구성한다는 의지를 나타낸다. 그러한 역사의식의 기록이자 성과물로서, 한국문학사에 돌올한 외양을 보이는 『관부연락선』 『산하』 『지리산』 등의 장편소설을 목격하게 된다.

영문 초록

This essay will shed a light on the route of Lee Byung-Joo’s historical awareness and the meaning of its trend and purpose. It will also look at these issues within the context. In order to do so, this essay must also take a look at the overall development of the author’s works along with the method and pattern of literary cognition. Focusing on [The Ferryboat] which is the most well-known fiction for this kind of historical recognition, and also the first one to announce the arrival of similar type of other fictions, this essay will inspect manifest of the historical awareness and characteristic quality. As discussed, the historical awareness shown in Lee Byung-Joo’s fiction narrates intense experience that is rare in our literature, and makes a story out of its essential spirit. In terms of historical character that is hidden in the base, his fiction reinforces the intimacy between this fact and the receiver. As a matter of common knowledge, historical fiction is based on the real historical events and adding fictional stories within author’s imagination. For this, Lee Byung-Joo’s fiction and his historical awareness is the result of the mixture between the dramatic time period in modern Korean history, and author’s talent of making it to be a story. Lee Byung-Joo’s literary and fictional view basically starts from mythological literature that is focused on ‘imagination.’ Because that recorded history cannot genuinely show all of the pain and sorrow of real people who actually lived in that era, the author’s view represents his intention of reconstructing the reality of human life into a fiction. As the outcome, readers witness fictions like [The Ferry boat][Mountain and River] [Mt. Giri] that are unique and special in Korean literary history.
