한국 도시시의 소외의식

국문 초록

도시 문제는 현대시의 주요 주제이다. 도시의 삶을 제재로 삼는 도시시의 핵심은 소외에 있다 할 수 있다. 소외의 유형은 도시문명으로부터의 소외, 인간 사회로부터의 소외, 자기 자신으로부터의 소외 등 셋으로 나눌 수 있거니와, 한국 도시시는 이에 따라 문학사적 맥락을 체계화할 수 있고, 각 유형의 특성과 맥락을 찾을 수 있다. 첫째, 한국 도시시의 ‘문명에서의 소외’는 1920년대부터 문명에 대한 갈망과 거부라는 양방향이 동시에 작용하는 모순에서 시작된다. 해방후에는 문명비판의 동력이 되기도 하지만 결국은 문명의 기계주의와 자동화에 의해, 전통적 삶에서도 문명사회에서도 쫓겨나는 자아 고립, 주체부재의 익명성에 빠져들게 된다. 둘째, ‘사회적 소외’는 일제하에서부터 사회체제에 유기적으로 편입되지 못하고 고립되면서 발생한다. 자본주의 체제를 비판하는 동력이 되기도 했지만, 도시적 삶에 대한 운명적 수용을 모색하기도 하는 것이 도시시에 나타난 사회적 소외의 정조라 할 수 있다. 셋째, ‘자아와 세계 상실의 소외’는 20년대 도시시에서부터 내재되어온 바이지만, 1950년대의 시에서 훨씬 구체화된다. 전통 윤리가 사라지고 범죄가 일상화한 도시에서 자신의 경험을 의미 있게 결합하지 못하고 파편화 시킨다. 인간적 가치의 상실, 무의미의 소외이다. 이 과정에서, 우리나라 시인들에게는 일제와 미군정 시기의 제국주의와 자본주의 사회체제가 일찌감치 고도산업사회에 못지않은 정신적 억압요인으로 작용하였고, 우리 도시시로 하여금 복합적인 소외를 경험하게 하였다고 생각된다. 따라서 우리나라 도시시의 인간성 자각과 탐구의 문제는 산업화 이후, 1980년대에 본격화한 것이라기보다, 1920년대에서부터 형성된 한국 현대시의 관습의 하나가 아닌가 한다.

영문 초록

Urban problems are one of the major themes of modern poetry, and alienation would be the core of urban poetry which deals with city life. There are three types of alienation―from civilization, from human society, and from the self―which can be also applied to Korean urban poetry, in which diachronic context and characteristics of each type can be found. Firstly, alienation from civilization in Korean urban poetry originated in the 1920s from the simultaneous contradiction between aspiration for and denial of civilization. Expelled from both traditional life and modern civilization, the poetic narrators gradually fall to the self-absent anonymity in isolation. Secondly, alienation from human society originated from the failure of organic adaptation to social system under Japanese rule. It is urban poetry's general feeling that while the poetic narrators could not adjust or could only mechanically react to urban system, they seek how to accept it. Lastly, alienation from the self and the world, already inherent in Korean urban poetry of the 1920s, became much more concrete in the 1950s poetry. In the modern city where its traditional ethic has disappeared and crimes prevail, the poetic narrators fail to unite their own experiences meaningfully, only to fragmentize them. This is a loss of whole values. Moreover, imperialism and capitalism under Japanese rule and the US military occupation seem to have already made Korean poets experience complex isolation as an emotional suppression, no less than an industrial society. Therefore, it can be thought that self-awareness and search of humanity in urban poetry have already been a literary convention in Korean modern urban poetry since the 1920s rather than become manifested in the 1980s.
