국문 초록

이 글은 포은 정몽주의 주향처로서 우리나라에서 두 번째로 사액된 임고서원을 문화사적 시각에서 살펴 본 것이다. 임고서원은 이황의 서원보급운동에 힘입어 출현했다는 점에서 창건 과정은 퇴계학의 적용으로 해석할 수 있고, 임진왜란 이후 중건 과정에서는 장현광의 영향력이 강화되었다는 점에서 여헌학의 확산으로 이해할 수 있었다. 여느 서원과 마찬가지로 임고서원은 존현과 위도의 공간으로서 경향 각처 명사들의 내방이 끊이지 않은 사림의 명소로 기능하였고, 이 과정에서 이루어진 관인층의 경제적 지원은 서원의 관리.운영에 커다란 도움이 되었다. 또한 임고서원은 17세기 초반까지는 한강.지산.여헌학의 절충지대를 이루면서 지역의 학술과 문화적 분위기를 고조시키는데 크게 이바지했다. 특히, 두 차례에 걸친 『포은집』의 간행은 임고서원이 정몽주의 주향처로서의 역할에 매우 충실했음을 단적으로 보여주는 사례였다. 한편 임고서원은 개성의 숭양서원, 용인의 충렬서원, 재경 정몽주 후손들과 소통하는 한편으로 정치.경제.사회적인 연대를 모색하였다. 이런 소통과 연대는 경제적인 지원과 협조는 물론 정치사회적인 어려움을 타개하는 데에도 매우 효과적으로 활용되었다.

영문 초록

The author of this paper tried to overview the meaning of the Imgo Seowon from the cultural historical viewpoint. Imgo Seowon was built as a main shrine for Jeong Mongju, Neo-Confucian from late Koryeo kingdom and was financially supported by the royal court of early Joseon dynasty following the Sosu Seowon . But when you think about the process and the beginning of the seowon it can be regarded as the adaption of the school of Yi Hwang but when it comes to the rebuilding after 1592's Japan's attack to Korea, it also can be considered as the spreading of idea of the school of Jang Hyeongwang; because the school of Jang had influence on its rebuilding process. As like other seowons, the Imgo functioned as a community center of literati of the local; it attracted local literati and local government officials to practice the memorial service of the deceased Neo-Confucians who could be their ideal model in learning the way (tao) and to improve their morality. This human resources and connection was a kind of channel of financial support and management. Until 17th century had the Imgo Seowon contributed to the spreading and establishment of many schools of the Neo-Confucianism such as Hankang, Jisan and Yeohyeon in Gyeongsang area and promoted the cultural and academic atmosphere. In particular, the publication of the collection of Jeong Mongju showed that it was the main shrine of Jeong both in name and reality. Furthermore, students of the seowon did not forget to communicate with other academic communities like Sungyang, Chungryeol, and even with Jeong's descendents and continued to keep the solid relationship with them financially and politically as well.
