국문 초록

회심은 기독교 신앙과 사역에 있어서 필수불가결한 요인이 아닐 수 없다. 또한 기독교 역사에 있어서도, 회심은 매우 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있다. 특별히 미국교회와 부흥의 역사에 있어서 회심에 대한 견해의 차이는 신학적 변천의 주요한 요인으로 작용해 왔으며, 청교도주의와 부흥주의의 신학적 차이를 단면적으로 보여주고 있다. 이러한 신학적 변천을 조나단 에드워즈(Jonathan Edwards, 1701-1758)와 찰스 피니(Charles Finney, 1792-1875)의 사상 속에서 선명하게 발견할 수 있다. 이 두 인물이 미국 교회와 신앙에 미친 영향은 매우 지대하며, 그들의 회심에 대한 상이한 견해와 특성 등을 고찰하면서 청교도 신앙, 뉴잉글랜드 신학, 그리고 부흥주의로 이어지는 미국신학의 단면도를 고찰할 수 있다. 결국 회심의 궁극적인 요인이 무엇인지에 대한 견해의 차이는 성경적인 가르침과 정통적 기독교 교리의 틀 안에서 회심을 이해하고 적용하는지의 여부를 판단하는 준거가 되고 있다. 그런면에서 에드워즈는 구원과 회심의 중심을 하나님으로 보았고, 피니는 인간으로 보았음이 확연하게 드러난다. 이러한 신학적 차이와 변천을 미국 기독교의 시대적배경과 두 인물의 신학적 입장과 특성을 중심으로 비교하면서, 그 요인들에 대해 분석하고 비평함으로써 올바른 개혁주의적 회심교리에 대한 이해를 에드워즈를 통해 확인하고 새롭게 구현함으로 이 시대의 일그러진 신학적 자화상을 교정하고, 바르고 역동적인 경건의 능력을 회복하는 방안이 무엇인지를 숙고해야 할 것이다. 진정한 종교적 열정이야말로 참 부흥의 결정적인 증거이다. 피니와 달리, 에드워즈의 회심에 대한 신학과 설교는 성경의 진리를 통해 검증되어야 하고, 그러한 토대 위에서라야 진정한 부흥의 불꽃이 피어오른다는 사실을 그의 신학과 사역을 통해 참된 모델을 제공하였다.

영문 초록

Without Christian conversion, there is no Christian faith. Conversion is central, indispensable, and important to biblical teaching and evangelistic preaching. Also, conversion has occupied one of major places in church history, particularly in the history of American Christianity. It is crucial to grasp the meaning of conversion for a proper understanding of Christianity in America. In order to capture the centrality of conversion and its changing role in American Christianity, it is necessary to look into the conversion theory of major American Christian leaders. Thus, in this article, we will investigate the thoughts of Jonathan Edwards (1701-1758), and Charles Finney (1792-1875) regarding conversion. Theses two theologians, living in different contexts, developed their own conversion theory. The influence of these two theologians upon today's foundations of understanding conversion are immense. The shifts of understanding about conversion are shown in the doctrine of conversion, which is vitally and inseparably linked with other fundamental Christian faith. In conversion, Jonathan Edwards saw God as the center of salvation, Finney saw man. The emergence of true religious affections is the final sign by which a revival may be judged. Unlike Finney, the theology and preaching for conversion of Edwards appropriately looks to the truth of Scripture as the end and standard by which revival should be judged; in this, he provides a model we would do well to follow.
