국문 초록

세계교회협의회(WCC)가 2013년 제10차 총회를 부산에서 개최한다는 공식적인 발표가 있은 후 WCC와 그 신학에 대한 논의가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 이런 맥락에서 이 논문 서두에서는 WCC의 조직과 발전에 대해 간략하게 개관하고 한국으로 소개되는 과정을 기술하였다. IMC는 사실상 WCC의 창립을 포함한 다음 시기의 에큐메니칼운동의 시원이 되지만 이때까지 한국교회는 IMC를 포함한 세계교회 운동에 참여하였다. 그러나 1948년 WCC가 립된 후 한국교회, 특히 장로교회에서는 WCC에 참여할 것인가 아닌가를 두고 심각한 토론이 전개되었는데, 이 논문에서는 한국(특히 장로)교회에서 WCC가 어떻게 수용되고 인식되어 왔던가를 역사적으로, 그리고 신학적으로 논구하였다. WCC에 대한 상반된 견해가 결국 교회장로분열의 주된 요인이었고, 그 대립적 견해가 그 이후의 한국교회와 신학을 구분하는 경계선이 되었다는 점을 문헌에 근거하여 교회사적으로 정립하였다. 또 WCC를 둘러싼 논쟁은 한국교회의 에큐메니칼 운동과 교회 연합, 신학이해, 교회생활 전반에 영향을 주었다는 점을 후반부에서 지적하였다.

영문 초록

After official announcement of holding of the Tenth Assembly of World Council of Churches(WCC hereafter) on 2013 in Busan, Korea, WCC and its theology and structure became a burning issue in Korean church. In the introductory part of this article, the formation and development of the WCC were shortly described. The International Missionary Council(IMC) provided the basic worldwide structure for the entire ecumenical movement in the later years, and Korean churches also participated in the IMC and other ecumenical organizations during that period of time. However, after formation of WCC in 1948, there has been two contrasting views in the Korean Presbyterian churches regarding to participation of WCC. This paper examined two different views to WCC, and analyzed Korean Presbyterians’ relations and attitude toward WCC in the streams of Korean church history, especially concerned with the fierce argument on WCC in Korean Presbyterian circle in 1950's. The writer also traced historically and theologically on the facts of pros and cons toward WCC causing the most crucial issues of the Korean Presbyterian churches division in 1950’s. The remaining parts are devoted to the influence of WCC upon Korea in connection with church division, theology and church life.
