국문 초록

본고는 신경준이 저술한 『道路考』중에서 「四沿路」를 중심으로 그 성립 배경과 의미, 경로 등을 연구하였다. 『道路考』는 4권 2책의 필사본으로 「御路」, 「六大路」, 「四沿路」, 「驛路」, 「擺撥路」, 「烽路」, 「海路」, 「潮汐」, 「風雨」, 「開市」등의 내용을 담고 있어, 당시 우리나라의 교통로에 대한 모든 정보를 종합하면서 실용적인 지식을 담고 있는 지리서로 판단된다. 특히 『道路考』는 우리나라의 뼈대에 해당하는 「六大路」와 혈관을 이루는 「旁通之路」, 바깥 형상을 두루는 「四沿路」가 종합되어 우리나라의 도로망 체계를 갖추고 있다. 사연은 우리나라의 동서남북, 즉 사방을 가리키는데 '백두산로', ' 두만강연로', ' 압록강연로'를 포함하는 양강연과 '팔도해연로'에서 언급되는 동해연, 남해연, 서해연에 해당한다. 「四沿路」는 사연에 접하는 모든 군현을 연결시켜 읍치뿐만 아니라 월경지까지 경로에 포함하고 있다. 신경준에 의해 최초로 정립된 「四沿路」는 숙종대 국경분쟁이 대두되면서 영조대에 이르러 이 개념을 도입하여 우리 영역의 범위 설정을 시도하고 있다. 이는 우리 강역에 대한 인식에 바탕한 영토관의 반영이며, 신경준 이후로 제작되는 『청구도』, 『동여도』, 『대동여지도』등의 방안식 지도에도 압록강-백두산-두만강을 잇는 지역이 지도화되는 것으로 계승되고 있다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the background, significance, and courses of Sayeonro in 『Dorogo』 written by Shin Kyung-Jun. 『Dorogo』 is a manuscript composed of two volumes in four books and contains Eoro(King's Road), Six-Daero(Six Main Roads), Sayeonro(Four Peripheral Roads), Yeokro(Horse Road), Pabalro(Post Road), Bongro(Signal Fire Road), Haero(Sea Road), Joseok(Tide), Pungwoo(Wind and Rain), Gaesi(Open Market) and so on. 『Dorogo』 is regarded as a geography book which generalizes every information about the roads of our nation and contains practical knowledge at that time. Especially, this book shows that our road system is a network of Six-Daero, a skeleton of our main roads and Sayeonro, blood vessels of our perimeter roads. Sayeon means four directions: East, West, South and North. It includes Yanggangyeon with Baekdusanro, Amnokgangyeonro, and Dumangangyeonro, Eastseayeon, Southseayeon, and Westseayon, which are involved with Paldohaeyeonro. Sayeonro connects all the Gunhyeons, counties and prefectures and includes not only Eupchi but also Wolgyeongji as its courses. The concept of Sayeonro, established by Shin Kyung-Jun for the first time, was used to set a boundary to define our territory in the King Youngjo period after a border dispute in the King Sukjong period. This reflects the perception of the territory based on the awareness of our domain. And it affects the mapping of the area connecting Amnok River, Mt. Baekdu, and Duman River on the grid-system maps such as『Cheonggudo』, 『Dongyeodo』, and 『Daedongyeojido』, all of which were made after Shin Kyung-Jun.
