목판본 『대동여지도』의 지명 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 목판본 『대동여지도』의 수록 지명을 도별.유형별로 분류하고 자연 지명과 인문 지명, 지명어 빈도 등을 비교 분석함으로써 조선 후기 한반도의 지명 체계를 이해하고자 하였다. 나아가 지명을 통해 지역성과 역사성을 읽어 보고자 한 시도이다. 도별 지명 수는 경상도와 평안도, 전라도, 유형별 분류는 산, 하천, 고개 및 섬.해안 지명이 높게 나타난다. 지역별, 유형별로는 경상도에 산, 봉수, 역참 지명, 전라도는 섬.해안, 진.포, 목장 지명, 강원도는 방리 지명, 함경도는 기타 지명, 평안도는 고개와 하천, 진보, 창고 지명이 많이 분포하였다. 지명어 빈도 분석에서, 자연 지명은 12개, 인문 지명은 16개가 범주화 되었다. 이는 각각의 지명어가 함의하고 있는 자연 및 인문 환경적 관계와 위치, 분포의 특징을 통해 지역성을 읽고, 비교하기 위함이었다. 이와 같은 연구 결과는 목판본 『대동여지도』에 나타난 지명의 명명 기반에 따른 유형분류를 통하여 지명과 지리적 환경과의 상관성을 규명하고 나아가 지역 특성과 고유성을 밝혔다.

영문 초록

This study aims to identify the geographical name system of the Korean Peninsula in the latter part of the Joseon Period. It classifies the geographical names in the woodblock edition of 『Daedongyeo-jido』 by province and pattern, and comparatively analyzes physical, human placenames, and toponym frequency. This study has also attempted to examine locality and historicity through the geographical names. For classification with region and pattern, many mountains, beacons, postal, village, postal place names are found in Gyeongsangdo. Jeolla-do has lots of geographical names of coasts, shores, ranches. Place names of many villages and others are found in Gangwon-do and Hamgyeong-do respectively. Place names like passes, rivers, shores, warehouses are greatly distributed in Pyeongan-do. In the frequency analysis of toponyms, 12 physical and 16 human place names have been categorized. Such categorization is to identify and compare physical and human environmental relationships and the characteristics of locations and distributions. The study results have found correlations between geographical names and geographical environment exhibited through pattern classification in 『Daedongyeo-jido』 and have further identified regional features and uniqueness.
