국문 초록

국어에서 ‘-었었-’은 매우 특이한 형태이다. 외형적으로 보면, 같은 형태가 중첩되어 있기 때문이다. 이는 ‘-더-’, ‘리-’ 등 다른 선어말어미는 ‘-더더-’, ‘-리리-’ 등으로 중첩되어 쓰일 수 없는 것과 대조적이다. 본고에서는 이러한 특이한 형태가 생기는 원인을 ‘-어 잇-’>‘엇-’의 문법형태화에서 찾아 보았다. 근대국어의 ‘-엇-’는 ‘-엇-’이 ‘-어 잇-’에서 왔다는 것을 염두에 둘 때 설명이 가능하다. 나아가 ‘-었었-’에 대한 설명은 ‘-엇-’에 기반할 때 가능해지는 것으로 보인다. ‘-엇-’처럼 ‘-었었-’도 두 가지가 존재한다. ‘-었1-’은 ‘-어 있-’이나 ‘-고 있-’ 등으로 환원 가능한 것과 환원 가능하지 않은 것이 있다. 이에 따라 ‘-었2-’의 의미도 유동성을 보이게 된다. ‘-었었-’의 ‘-었2-’가 보이는 고립적인 측면을 ‘-엇-’라는 근대국어의 형태를 통해서 설명해 보려 하였다.

영문 초록

-essess- is a very idiosyncratic morpheme in Korean; at first glance, it appears to be a case of total reduplication of a grammatical form. In this sense, it contrasts with other prefinal endings like –te- and –li- that cannot be reduplicatged as * -te-te- or * -lili. This paper discusses the origins of this idiosyncratic morpheme in terms of morphological grammaticalization of –e is- ( -es-. Early Modern Korean –es- is best understood in the context of its originated in –e is-, and modern –essess- likewise is best explained in the light of Early Modern Korean –es-. Thus, just as there are two different kinds of Early Modern Korean –es-, there are two different cases of modern –essess-; -ess-1 can be converted to -e iss- or -ko iss-, but –ess-2 not; thus, –ess-2 shows indeterminacy in meaning. This paper attempts to explain the isolative aspects of –ess-2 in -essess- in view of the Early Modern Korean morpheme -esno-.(Seoul National University)
