마라 (Mara) 의 도전과 붓다의 대응

국문 초록

입멸 직전까지 붓다의 전생애에 걸쳐 수시로 마라가 등장하여 붓다와 대결하고 있다. 붓다와 마라의 대결은 단지 일회적인 싸움이 아니다. 붓다라는 한 영웅이 마라의 지배에서 벗어났지만 마라는 기회 있을 때마다 붓다로 하여금 자신의 지배하에 있는 중생들에게 해탈할 수 있는 길을 알리지 못하도록 하고 있다. 붓다와 마라의 대결은 단순히 두 인물간의 사적(私的)인 싸움이 아니다 열반의 세계를 대표하는 붓다와 윤회의 세계를 대표하는 마라의 대립이다 불교 세계관에 의거하여 보면 윤회와 열반이라는 두 세계의 긴장과 갈등 구조가 붓다와 마라라는 두 인물의 대립으로 나오고 있는 것이다. 본고에선 크게 세 시기에 걸쳐 붓다와 마라의 대결을 살펴보았다. 1)정각 직전의 시기에는 마라가 미래의 붓다가 자신의 영역에서 벗어나지 못하도록 대결하는 것이었다. 2) 정각 직후부터 시작되는 붓다의 설법 기간 중에는 붓다의 설법을 저지하기 위한 마라의 도전이었다. 3) 붓다의 말년에는 마라가 붓다에게 입멸을 재촉하고 있었다. 윤회에서 벗어나게 하는 설법을 더 이상하지 못하도록 마라가 요구하고 있는 것이다 정각 이후 붓다와 마라의 대결 중심에는 설법이 핵심 문제로 자리 잡고 있는 것이다， 붓다의 설법은 마라의 세계에서 벗어날 수 있는 열쇠를 청중들에게 제공해 주는 것이다. 자신의 영역을 잃지 않으려는 마라의 술수는 정각 직전엔 미래의 붓다에겐 세속의 행복을 만끽하라고 유혹하는 형태로 나타나고 정각 후엔 설법 방해라는 형태로 나타나고 있는 것을 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

Mara in the Buddhist tradition can be best understood as Satan, who always tried to dissuade the Buddha or his disciples from the righteous path. From time to time Mara appears to challenge the Buddha during his lifetime. The Buddha' s encounters with Mara implicitly shows the conflict between Nirvana and Samsara since the Buddha represents Nirvana, and Mara stands for Samsara. The literatures on the Buddha's encounters with Mara show the Buddha's victory over Mara, which leads Buddhist readers to glorify the Buddha Among the Buddha's encounters with Mara, this article deals with three encounters; one before the Buddha's enlightenment, one after the Buddha's enlightenment, the last one before his parinirvana. The first encounter is analysed to show that mara tried to prevent the Bodhissatta from attaining enlightenment. The origin of the legend of mara is first noticeable in the Padhana Sutta. His ten- fold army is Lust; A version; Hunger; Thirst; Craving; Sloth and Torpor; Cowardice; Doubt; Hypocrisy and Stupidity; False Glory; and Conceit. The Bodhisatta won over Mara by identifying his nature and properties. In the second encounter, Mara attempted to discourage the newly Enlightened One from teaching what he has just attained. In the third encounter, Mara asked for the Buddha' s parinibbana. The Buddha's fateful encounter with Mara at Bodhgaya, was not his initial experience with the Evil One, as he had also been tempted by Mara in the period between his renunciation of secular life and his attainment of Enlightenment. However, it is from the immediate pre-Enlightenment conflict onward that mara figures most prominently in accounts of the Buddha and with the Buddha' s subsequent disciples. The second most important encounter of the Buddha with mära took place shortly before the Buddha's death. On this occasion Mära tried to persuade the Buddha to pass away into parinirvana, but the Buddha knew that he must delay his passing for a few months. Early Buddhism acknowledged both a literal and "psychological" interpretation of Mara. Mara is described both as an entity having a literal existence, and also is described as a primarily psychological force. This article has no room for discussing this matter.
