국문 초록

이 연구는 최근 평생교육맥락에서 확장되고 있는 문화예술교육의 한 사례로서 평생교육현장의 다양한 접점에서 예술교육활동을 주도하고 있는 “가르치는 예술가”로서의 ‘Teaching Artist’ 사례에 주목하였다. 본래 다양한 예술장르의 전문예술가 그룹이었던 이들이 “가르치는 예술가(teaching artist)”로 전환하는 과정에서 나타난 두드러진 차이는 기존의 예술(art)을 이해하는 방식의 변화 없이 단순히 페다고지적 방법론을 추가함으로써 이루어지는 과정이 아니라는 점이다. 이들은 교육적 역량이 매개되면서 기존의 자신의 예술작업 전체를 다시 바라보는 관점의 전환을 경험하며, 이는 예술가로서뿐 아니라 교육자로서도 성숙하는 계기로 발전된다. 교육경험이 축적되면서 이들은 교육활동에 내재된 관계적 속성이 예술창작활동의 본질과도 유사한 속성이 있음을 발견하게 된다. 이와 관련하여 본 연구는 크게 네 부분으로 나누어진다. 첫째 예술가에서 교육가로의 삶을 견인하는 과정에서 나타난 삶의 맥락과 특징은 무엇인지 알아보고, 둘째, “가르치는 예술가”로서의 활동을 기획하면서 이들이 결집하고 있는 ‘Teaching Artist’ 프로그램과 교육활동을 통해 ‘예술가’이자 ‘교육자’로서의 새로운 정체성을 획득해가는 공통된 경험을 밝힌다. 셋째, “가르치는 예술가”로서 거듭나는 과정에서 경험한 교육적 역량은 무엇이며, 이를 통해 기존의 예술세계는 어떻게 재규정되는지를 분석한다. 마지막으로 예술가이자 교육자라는 자아의 공존이 이들의 삶에서 어떻게 융합되고 있는지를 설명한다.

영문 초록

This paper focuses on the case of “Teaching Artists” who have taken a leading role in arts education as a newly emerging arts education trend in the context of lifelong education. The distinguishing feature of the transformative process from performing artists to “teaching artists” is that it is not just a pedagogic methodological addition without the changed way of understanding art. They experience changes in viewpoint, rethinking their artwork in transition to “teaching artists”. It becomes an opportunity for them to grow as a great teacher as well as a great artist. With the accumulation of teaching experiences, they realize that the interactive feature of teaching has a similarity to the nature of artwork. This research has four parts. First part is to examine the life context and meaning in the process of attracting performing artists to “teaching artists”. Second part is to examine the reconstruction of identity both as a teacher and as an artist through the common experience they share in Teaching Artist Program. Third part is to reveal the educational competence of “teaching artists” and the different features of performing artists and “teaching artists”. Fourth part is to explain the self-coexistence both as a teacher and as an artist, and how they are fused together in their life.
