국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 주륙(朱陸)의 무극태극논쟁에서 육구연의 입장을 조명하는 것이다. 이 논쟁 자체가 유의미한 것인지 아닌지에 대해 기존 연구자들의 논란이 있지만, 이 논문에서는 이 논쟁을 육구연 입장에서 재구성함으로써 논쟁의 의미를 찾고자 한다. 지금까지 이 논쟁에 대한 가장 유력한 해석은 풍우란(馮友蘭)이 제시한 일원론과 이원론의 대립이었다. 필자는 이 해석이 논쟁의 배경은 되지만, 주희가 말한 육구연의 ‘의도’를 보여주지는 못한다고 보고, 이 논쟁을 시작한 육구연의 ‘의도’를 파악하고자 하였다. 무극태극논쟁을 시작한 육구연의 ‘의도’는 둘이다. 첫째, 외(外)를 강조하는 유학 내부의 이단을 비판하는 데 초점을 맞춘 자신의 독특한 이단론에 근거하여 육구연은 주희의 도덕 이론이 바로 이단이라고 주장하고자 하였다. 둘째, 경전을 비롯한 텍스트의 위상과 수양에서의 역할에 대한 주희의 과도한 강조를 비판하고, 육구연은 경전을 비롯한 테스트가 유의미하기 위해서는 그 텍스트를 활용할 수 있는 독자의 비판적 주체가 우선 성립하여야 하며, 이 주체는 마음에 대한 주목을 통해서만 형성할 수 있다는 특징적인 관점을 제시하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This dissertation's focus is to clarify the Lu Jiuyuan's aim in the debate on ‘the Great Ultimate and the Ultimate of Nonbeing’ with Chu Hsi. Until these days there is even no consensus whether or not this debate is significant from an philosophical point of view. The most important analysis of the debate is the Feng youlan(馮友蘭)'s view. He explains the debate as a conflict of monism and dualism. I think monism and dualism could be the theoretical background of the debate, but it does not explain what is the Lu Jiuyuan's aim in the debate. Lu Jiuyuan did not focus on criticizing Chu Hsi's monism. I think that Lu Jiuyuan has two aims in the debate. First, we must notice Lu Jiuyuan's theory of heterodoxy whose peculiarity is that criticizing the heterodoxy within the Confucianism. Based on his theory of heterodoxy, some Confucian were affected by Laozi(老子) from the early period of the Confucianism. Lu Jiuyuan insists what the heterodoxy within the Confucianism emphasizes is not the inside of human being like the original mind but the role of devices which exist in the outside of human being. Lu Jiuyuan attacks Chu Hsi as heterodoxy because the origin of Chu Hsi's concept of ‘the Ultimate of Nonbeing(無極)’ is Laozi(老子) and also Chu Hsi emphasize the outside devices of human being like Laozi(老子). Second, Lu Jiuyuan's fundamental argument is that we need reader's judgment before ones start to read books. Similarly when one want to start one's self-cultivation, he firstly needs the subject that lead the process of one's self-cultivation, or at least moral awakening. It means that Chu Hsi overstress the role of Confucianism texts and wide reading in the self-cultivation.
