국문 초록

배경 및 목적: 말더듬의 발생 및 진전에 관련된 것으로 알려진 아동의 기질, 어머니의 기질 및 양육행동의 특성을 살펴봄으로써, 말더듬아동의 기질적 취약성과 환경적 영향을 이해하고 효과적인 중재방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 방법: 취학전 말더듬아동 20명과 말더듬아동과 생활연령을 일치시킨 일반아동 20명으로 구성된 두 집단의 총 40명의 어머니들에게 부모용 평정척도인 Emotionality, Activity, Sociability Temperament Scale(EAS)과 Parent Temperament Questionnaire for children 3～7 years of age(PTQ), 양육행동척도를 이용하여 아동 및 어머니의 기질과 양육행동에 관한 자료를 수집하였다. 결과: 첫째, 아동의 기질에서는 말더듬아동의 적응성이 일반아동보다 유의하게 낮았다. 둘째, 어머니의 기질에서는 말더듬아동 어머니의 부정적 정서성이 일반아동 어머니보다 유의하게 높았다. 셋째, 어머니의 양육행동에서는 말더듬아동 어머니의 ‘허용/방임’ 행동이 일반아동 어머니보다 유의하게 많았다. 논의 및 결론: 연구결과들을 종합하여 볼 때에, 취학전 말더듬아동의 말더듬을 이해하기 위해서는 말더듬아동의 기질과 어머니의 기질 및 양육행동들을 파악하는 것이 유용할 것이다.

영문 초록

Background & Objectives: Childhood temperament is regarded as a major factor influencing the onset and development of stuttering and is known to be associated with their parents’ temperament and parenting style. The purpose of this study was to examine the temperament of children who stutter (CWS) and their mothers’ temperament and parenting behavior. Methods: The participants included 40 preschool children(20 CWS and 20 age-matched normal children[NC]) and their mothers. The data were collected using Emotionality, Activity, Sociability (EAS) temperament scale, Parent Temperament Questionnaire for children 3-7 years of age, and Inventory of Parental Behavior. Results: Significant differences between the CWS and the NC groups were observed in 1) the adaptability in terms of child’s temperament; 2) the emotionality in terms of the mothers’ temperament; and 3) acceptance/tolerance in terms of parenting behavior. Discussion & Conclusion: Caution should be taken in interpreting the result of this study as it could provoke a sense of guilt among the CWS's parents or promote the stereotyping of CWS and their parents. However, it is recommended that consideration be given to children’s and mothers’ temperament as well as parenting style in evaluating and intervening preschool children who are suspected of stuttering.
