佛國寺의 毘盧殿과 觀音殿 영역에 관한 타당성 고찰

국문 초록

불국사 가람배치에 있어서 가장 두드러지는 특수성은 대웅전과 극락전 영역에 의한 二重軸線 구조가 설시되어 있다는 것이며， 그 다음으로는 대웅전 영역의 후면에 毘盧殿과 觀音殿이 回廊을 통해서 각기 독립된 영역을 구축하고 있다는 점이다. 불국사와 관련해서는 지금까지 총 300종 이상의 단행본 및 논문 등에 의한 해석적인 접근이 이루어졌다. 그러나 이러한 모든 연구 접근들 속에서도 비로전과 관음전 영역의 가람배치 상에서의 특수성에 관해서는 심도 있는 접근이 개진된 바가 없다. 이는 비로전과 관음전 영역이 1970-1973년에 걸친 불국사의 복원과 관련되어서， 정확한 판단에 의한 것이 아니므로 여기에는 필연적으로 불투명에 관한문제점이 내포되어 있기 때문이다. 그러나 불국사는 우리나라를 대표하는 세계문화유산인 동시에 내외국인이 가장 많이 찾는 사찰이라는 점 에서 그 속에 다소간 불투명성의 문제가 내포되어 있다고 하더라도 현상에 대한 합리적인 해석을 더 이상은 미루어 둘 수가 없다는 또 다른 문제가 있다. 필자는 이 문제의 접근에 있어서 기존에 명확성을 확보하고 있는， 불국사의 전체적인 가람배치의 정합성을 기초로， 비로전과 관음전 영역에 대한 타당한 해법 도출을시도해 보고자 하였다. 불국사가 한꺼번에 가람배치를 일신하는 사찰이라는 점은 불국사 가람배치의 유기적인 측면을 분명하게 드러내주고 있는 바라고 할 수가 있다. 그러므로 사상적인 입각점과 아울러 우리는 각 전각들 간의 相依相資적인 관점의 상호반향에 대해서도 주목해 보지 않을 수 없게 된다. 이는 비로전과 관음전을 단순히 비로전과 관음전의 이해 도출을 통해서만 파악해서는 안 되며， 이러한 전각들이 상관관계를 확보 할 수 있는 대웅전 및 극락전과의 관제파악이 필연적으로 요청되어질 수밖에 없다는 것을 의미한다. 그러므로 본고의 비로전과 관음전 이해에 있어서는 이들에 대한 각각적인 이해와 더불어 네 전각의 관계성에 의한 접근을 시도해 보고자 하였다. 왜냐하면， 이와 같은 방법 모색만이 우리로 하여금 불국사 가람배치에 대한 보다 타당성 있는 인식을 수립해 볼 수가 있도록 한다고 사료되어지기 때문이다.

영문 초록

The most peculiar point in the building arrangement of the Bulguksa Temple is the double axial structure by the Main Hall and the Paradise Hall. The next is that the Birojeon and the Gwaneumjeon in the back of the Main Hall create their own precincts in the corridor. Approximately 300 analyses of the Bulguksa have been published in treatises and books. Despite the proliferation of studies , there have been few deep studies on the special character in the building arrangement of the Birojeon and Gwaneumjeon Precincts. This is because the Birojeon and Gwaneumjeon Precincts are related to the restoration of Bulguksa during 1970-1973, which was accomplished using less than clear judgment, and therefore they inevitably contain the judgment problems in them. But, as the Bulguksa is a representative world cultural heritage in Korea and the temple that Korean and foreign tourists are visiting most frequently, rational interpretation of the phenomenon cannot be ignored even if there are some unclear problems. Based on the coherent part of the total building arrangement in the Bulguksa, which have already been verified in the approach to this problem, the author tried to draw out a feasible solution on the Birojeon and Gwaneumjeon Precincts. The Bulguksa is the temple , the building arrangement of which had been restored in a single effort. In this respect, the building arrangement of Bulguksa must have the organic interrelation. Therefore, along with an ideological approach , we have to notice the interaction among the buildings in an interpretative viewpoint. This means that the Birojeon and the Gwaneumjeon should not be understood only by drawing out their separate meanings but by securing the interrelation between them. Therefore , in this study on the Birojeon and the Gwaneumjeon, not only their separate meanings but also the interrelation among the four buildings were investigated. This approach was chosen because only this kind of investigation enables us to establish more feasible recognition on the building arrangement in Bulguksa.
