‘발트해-흑해 무역로’와 키예프 루시의 태동

국문 초록

러시아의 동유럽 평원은 초기 러시아 역사에서 매우 중요한 지리적, 경제적, 정치적 공간이다. 동유럽평원을 가로지르는 하천들을 통해 형성된 ‘발트해-흑해’ 교역로의 수로체계를 이용하여 러시아인들은 경제적 부를 축적할 수 있었으며, 교역로의 통제력을 확보한 이후 결국 초기 국가를 건설할 수 있었다. 수로체계의 근원지는 발다이 구릉지대였다. 수많은 하천의 발원지로서 발다이 구릉 지역은 동유럽과 아시아의 운명에 중대한 역할을 했다. 이곳으로부터 러시아는 발트 해, 흑해, 카스피 해, 북극해, 심지어 태평양까지 진출할 수 있었다. 그리고 수로체계에서 전략적으로 가장 중요 한 공간은 강과 강을 연결하는 수송기지였다. 러시아 고대국가인 키예프 루시의 흥망성쇠의 역사는 ‘발트해-흑해’ 로 이어지는 교역로의 수송체계와 수송체계를 관리하기 위한 목조요새로 만든 수송기지에 대한 지배권의 장악 여부와 밀접한 상관관계가 있음을 알 수 있다. 그래서 12세기 이후 교역로의 경제적 가치가 하락하고, 몽골에 의해 키예프 루시가 붕괴되어 ‘발트해-흑해’ 교역로의 지배권을 상실했을 때, 러시아 고대 국가의 기반이 와해되었다고 하겠다.

영문 초록

There is a road, so explains the Primary Chronicle, ‘from the Varagians to the Greeks’ trade route. This water road from the Baltic sea to the Black sea through the grand portage system became the basis of the first Russian stats, known as Novgorod principality and Kievan Rus. From this time, for four centuries of Russian history this trade route had played important roles of building and developing Russian state. From the earliest times, it is evident that the rivers determined the direction of colonization as well as creation of the ancient politcal groups in Russia. The portages(called voloki in Russian) system were of strategic significance of this highway. And that The portages between rivers and lakes usually served as territorial and state boundaries, so to speak, they were the mountains in vast East European plain of Russia. Novgorod principality and the Kievan Rus which dominated this trade route as geopolitical, geoeconomical region were able to prosper, because they controlled the trade route from the Baltic sea to the Black sea and that trade route had an abundant supply of furs, wax, honey, slaves and so on. As early as the twelfth and early thirteenth century important events were taking place which heralded profound changes along the great water road. The Crusade brought a shift in European trade routes that accelerated the decline of Kievan Rus. In 1204 the forces of the Fourth Crusade sacked Constantinople, making the 'Baltic sea-Black sea' trade route marginal. As it declined, Kivan Rus splintered into many principalities and several regional centers. So in the long run, the fact is that when economic value of this trade route ‘from the Baltic sea to the Black sea’ was undermined, the Kievan State disintegrated.
