국문 초록

자연언어가 약속된 기호체계에 불과하기 때문에 대상 그 자체 혹은 그 본질을 고스란히 대신할 수는 없다는 사실은 이제 상식에 속한다. 말은 사물 그 자체가 아니며, 그래서 말이 전달하는 내용 자체는 일종의 가상적인 것이다. 이러한 자연언어의 한계를 극복할 수 있는 대안으로 문학은 자연언어를 토대로 생성되는 2차 모델링 체계(secondary modeling system)로서의 언어를 사용한다. 자연언어 또는 일차언어(primary language)와 이차언어(secondary language) 사이의 복잡한 상호관계 중에서 중요한 점은 문학텍스트에서 사용되는 2차 모델링 체계의 언어가 기본적으로 자연언어에 그 기 반을 두고 있다는 사실이다. 또한 문학텍스트에서 사용되는 말은 그 내용과 표현이 조건적으로 같아야 하는 자연언어의 요건을 충족시키면서도, 동시에 같지 않아야 하는 이율배반적 속성을 지니고 있음에 유의해야 한다. 문화의 형성에 있어서 언어는 수동적인 구성 인자(dominant)가 아니다. 언어는 여러 세기에 걸친 문화적 과정의 산물이다. 이러한 자연 언어는 각 민족 문화의 지배적인 인자의 하나이기 때문에 언어학적 모델은 각각의 민족이 갖는 인식 정도를 규정할 수 있는 요소가 될 수 있다. 민족 언어가 2차 모델링 체계에 미치는 영향은 분명하다. 문학, 특히 시에 있어서 민족의 언어는 특히 중요하다. 한편 문화는 구조적 다양성의 용량을 증가시키는, 다시 말해서 구조적 자동성을 극복하는 방향으로 나타남과 동시에 구조적 통일성을 필요로 한다. 로트만은 인류의 문화에 나타나는 역동성을 이러한 문화 메커니즘의 이율배반적 기능으로 파악하고 있다. 본고는 로트만이 정의하는 1차 모델링 체계인 자연언어와 2차 모델링 체계인 시적언어와의 관계 조망을 통해서 문화 메커니즘의 이와 같은 이율배반적 특성을 선행적으로 고찰하고 있다. 기호학적 체계를 두 가지 유형 즉 일차적 정보를 지향하는 체계와 이차적 정보를 지향하는 체계로 구분한다면, 본고에서 다루고 있는 예술텍스트는 이차적 정보를 지향하는 전형적인 경우라고 할 수 있다. 단일하고 복잡한 기호학적 전체인 문화는 이율배반의 복잡한 관계에 놓여있는 이 두 가지 체계의 구조적 긴장 속에서 파악되어야 한다. 보다 본격적인 문화기호학 관련 이론과 이를 원용한 구체적인 문화분석은 다음 논문의 과제로 남긴다.

영문 초록

It is a common sense that it is impossible for a natural language to represent its essence itself because it is merely an agreed upon sign system. Words are not an object in of themselves so what they convey is hypothetical. We have come to believe that literature can overcome this limit of natural language because it uses a secondary modeling system based on natural language. The most important thing among the complicated mutual relations between a natural language or a primary language and a secondary language is the fact that the language of a secondary modeling system which is used in a literal context is fundamentally based on natural language. Furthermore, it is noticeable that language in a literal context is antinomic in that it can satisfy the condition of a natural language in which its meaning and expressions are the same, and at the same time, they are different. In the formation of culture, a language is not a passive element but a product of a dynamic process over several centuries. Linguistic models can be used to determine the degree we can understand each nation because a natural language is one of its dominant elements. It is clear that the language of a nation has an affect on the secondary modeling system and it is very important in interpreting its literature and especially its poetry. Lotman realizes the dynamics in culture through the function of antinomy as a mechanism of culture. Culture not only increases the capacity of structural variety, in other words, it not only overcomes automaticity, it also needs a structural unity. This paper surveys the characteristics of antinomy in the mechanism of culture through the relationship between a natural language, a primary modeling system and a poetic language, a secondary modeling system, defined by Lotman. If the system of semiotics is divided into two; a system pointed to primary information and another system pointed to secondary information. The artistic text in this paper is a prototypical case of a system pointed to secondary information. Culture as a whole is a simple yet complicated semiotics which needs to be understood in the tension of an antinomic structure.
