한나 아렌트의 공교육 제안 논의

국문 초록

이 글은 현대 공교육에 대한 다양한 기대와 정의에 접근하는 한 가지 방법으로서 한나 아렌트의 공교육제안을 논의하였다. 한나 아렌트가 주장한 공교육을 이해하기 위해서는 먼저 그녀의 공공성개념을 파악해야 한다. 아렌트가 현상학적 방법을 통하여 밝혔던 공공성은 “차이에 기반하여 개인이 공적영역에 참여하는 행위”이다. 공공성에 있어 가장 중요한 요소는 개인의 독특성, 타인과의 차이, 자신의 견해를 말로서 표현함, 그리고 타인과의 대화와 토론이다. 아렌트는 이러한 공공성 개념과 관련지어 공교육을 제안했는데 어린이의 참여보다는 전통의 학습을, 공공성의 발휘보다는 분리를 강조했다. 그러나 성인의 권위에 의존한 교육은 공공성의 본래의미인 개인의 독특한 참여활동으로부터 멀어지게 되었고, 정치적 참여를 배제하는 공교육은 어린이의 대화와 토론능력을 과소평가하였다. 따라서 공교육기관은 차이에 기반한 개인의 공적 참여활동을 적극적으로 학습하는 장소가 되어야 한다.

영문 초록

This study is to discuss Hanna Arendt's conception of publicness and argument of her public education in order to approach how the public education should be understood. First, Hanna Arendt’s conception of publicness is reinterpreted. Publicness is refered to action based on the plurality and uniqueness taken to express an individual’s opinion through speech in the public realm. Second, her standpoint for modern public education is examined. Arendt argued that children must learn about traditions and public education needs to give an authority grown up person. And she asserts that publicness should not become a part of public education. This study discusses the importance of publicness and limits of argument for public education, so propose another form of contemporary public education in simple terms. First, This study insistes that both grown-up person(teacher, parents) and children must have the authority of education. Second, This study insistes that Arendt's conception of publicness should be reaffirmed. The broad and changed meanings of publicness are not proper for children and these should be carefully controlled in public schools. But publicness that means "action based on the plurality and uniqueness which is taken to express an individual’s opinion through speech in the public realm" should not be seperated from the school. By nature, as she says, public schools where children gather are basically public places that cannot be changed into private places. in addition, public schools should be put an extenti on to the publicness. Children get a chance to learn publicness and discussion in school in a proper way.
