맥밀란 유아교육론의 현대적 의의 탐색

국문 초록

본 연구는 영국 최초의 유아원을 창설하여 유아교육의 기초를 형성한 마가렛 맥밀란의 유아교육론과 교육현장에서의 실천이 현대 유아교육에 어떠한 영향을 주었으며 그 의의는 무엇인지를 살펴보았다. 맥밀란은 빈민가의 불우한 유아들을 돌보면서 빈곤계층의 아동복지에 크게 기여하였으며 20세기 초기 영국의 유아교육 개혁을 주도하였다. 그녀의 야외유아원 (open air nursery)은 빈곤층 유아들에게 보다 좋은 환경에서 교육받을 기회를 주어 가정환경의 부족함을 보충하는데 목적이 있었다. 맥밀란은 일찍이 교육과 보육을 통합한 교육 서비스를 제공하였으며, 또한, 가정과 유아교육기관 그리고 지역 사회와의 긴밀한 연계를 통해 유아원이 지역사회의 구심적 역할을 수행하도록 하였다. 맥밀란은 지역공동체의 삶의 여건을 개선하기위한 다양한 아동복지와 교육관련 인프라를 구축하려고 노력하였다. 유아와 부모 그리고 지역사회가 더 나은 삶의 여건을 누릴 수 있는 모델을 제시한 맥밀란의 실천지향적인 유아교육사상은 현대의 유아교육과 아동복지의 발전을 위해 좋은 시사가 될 것이다.

영문 초록

This study examines the following aspects: life and education ethos of McMillan, the curriculum in McMillan's nursery, and teacher training. Also, the study conducts a study on what kind of influence McMillan's ideas of early childhood education had on the academic study of early childhood education in the modern age, and how it can be applied. McMillan hugely contributed in the field of child welfare for the low income class, by taking care of the economically less fortunate young children of the inner city area. Also, she played a leading role in the reformation of early childhood education in England, early in the 20th Century. McMillan ensured that the children of the low-income class could grow up healthily by providing the necessary education service. Moreover, she developed the conditions of the communal life of the child, the parent and the local community. She even founded the process of training early childhood teachers, effectively strengthening the content of the teacher's education. This study shows that McMillan's practical and active ideas are assuming the role of a good model for the development of modern early childhood education and child welfare.
