국문 초록

이 논문은 노자의 “도가도비상도”에 나타난 역설적인 구조를 논리적으로 규명하면서, 노자의 의도가 무엇인지 해명해 보고자 한 것이다. 노자는 그 문장을 통해 언어의 한계와 상보적인 세계관을 동시에 지적하고 있다. 다시 말해 노자의 역설적인 문장에 대해 참과 거짓을 묻는 인식론적 태도는 언어란 무엇인가를 ‘전달하는’ 기능을 수행하는 것으로 본 견해로서, 그와 같은 접근은 우리를 언어적 혼돈으로부터 벗어날 수 없게 한다. 오히려 노자의 역설은 무엇인가를 ‘보여주는’ 기능을 수행하는 바, 그것은 첫째, 언어의 한계가 무엇인지를 깨닫게 해줌으로써 언어의 경계선 너머의 앎을 요구하고 있으며, 둘째, 유와 무의 동등한 범주를 인정하는 ‘상보성’이라는 존재의 위상을 고려해야 한다는 적극적인 의미가 있다고 보았다. 그리하여 노자의 역설은 인식의 혼돈을 유도하는 듯 하지만, 결국은 관점의 전환을 깨우치게 함으로서 역설을 극복하게 하는 치료적 기능을 한다.

영문 초록

In this paper, I want to put a logical explanation for Laozi's well known philosophical proposition of "The Way that can be spoken of cannot be a constant Way"(道可道非常道) in which I attempt to understand its paradoxical structure. I also, in that proposition, want to point out its linguistic limitation and complementary world view as well. Until now, the proposition has been dealt by the question whether it could be epistemologically understood in which the question might require a true or false conclusion to us, and in result, our 'representational' role of the language. However, this epistemological approach landed us in difficulties suffering in the linguistic perplexity. Thus, I rather try to emphasize kind of an actively 'disclosing' roles of Laozi's paradoxical proposition. The roles are as follows. First, his proposition needs the knowledge that is beyond our normal understanding of language. Therefore, we recognize the real meaning of language. Second, his proposition needs a complementarity of the being and not-being by which its ontological status is set in the equal category. Laozi's paradoxical proposition might often lead us to an 'epistemic chaos' based upon the linguistic perplexity. But, that is not true. Instead, by his philosophical paradox, we are able to come into a new turning point of the enlightenment in which the epistemic chaos, as a linguistic disease, might be recovered with the therapeutic touch.
