북한강 중상류지역 청동기·철기시대 유적의 연륜연대분석

국문 초록

북한강 중상류지역의 청동기시대 주거지와 철기시대 주거지의 연대 편년에 있어 특정시기에 집중되는 양상을 보여주고 있다. 이에 따라 탄화목을 중심으로 연륜연대를 파악할 수 있다는 가설하에 연륜연대를 비교하여 보았다. 비교 유적으로는 춘천 신매리 54-4번지 유적, 화천 용암리 유적, 춘천 우두동 유적, 철원 와수리 유적의 시료들에서 작성된 개체연대기들에 대한 상호간 비료를 실시한 결과 유적 내 시료 간에만 일치하고 유적 간의 일치는 보여주지 않았다. 춘천 신매리 유적은 3·8호 주거지의 연륜패턴이 일치하였으며 시대도 동일하게 나타나고 있었다. 화천 용암리 유적은 19·73·84·115호 주거지의 연륜패턴이 같게 나타나고 있다. 즉 동 시대임을 나타내고 있어 보고자의 견해와는 다른 결과를 도출하였다. 철원 와수리 유적은 26호 주거지내의 시료끼리만 일치하였다. 이상의 결과로 유적 내의 주거지 사이에는 유의성있는 결과를 보이고 있으나 유적 간 상대연대를 알아내는 것에는 실패하였다. 시료에 존재하는 연륜의 수가 적어 연대기를 비교할 만한 기간이 되지 않은 것이 가장 큰 요인이었다. 또한 연륜연대분석의 중요한 부분은 변재를 포함하는 수피부로서, 벌채연도를 알아내어 그 유적의 형성연대를 알아내는 것인데 수피부는 대부분 소실되고 수부분이 주로 남아있어 충족된 조건이 아니었다. 경험이 많지 않은 탄화목의 연륜연대분석을 통해 탄화목이 수종분석은 물론 연륜연대분석의 대상으로 가치가 높음을 보여준 조사였다. 유적지에서 출토된 숯의 상대연대분석에 대한 최초의 연구로 앞으로 우리나라 연륜 연대의 지평을 여는데 기여를 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Radiocarbon dates of the Bronze and Iron Age sites in the upper and middle streams of the Bukhan-river are concentrated in specific periods. The main hypothesis of this study is to test these radiocarbon dates using dendrochronology or tree-ring dating of the carbonized wood samples excavated from these sites. Samples of Sinmaeri 54-4 relic (Chuncheon), Yong'amri relic (Hwacheon), Udoodong relic (Chuncheon) and Wasuri relic (Chulwon) in Kangwon province in the east-central Korea were taken for the comparative analysis. We could not obtain absolute dates from tree rings due to lack of master chronologies in the regions. Therefore, we tried to secure relative dates among sites by comparing the growth patterns. There were no matching found in tree-ring patterns among relics. However, cross-matching patterns were found within some relics. Patterns of the samples from two habitation sites (no.3 and no.8) in Sinmaeri relic were exactly matched. It was the same as the results of C14 dating had indicated. The cutting dates, ie. the years when the timbers were felled, could not be exactly estimated since the carbonized samples from this site lacked the bark. Therefore, it was impossible to know whether two sites, no.3 and no.8 in Sinmaeri possessed the same cutting years or not. Other sites shared the similar limitations. It should be kept in mind that relative dates of the coutmost rings of samples provide no proof to the construction date of the site. Samples from four habitation sites (no.19, no.73, no.84, no.115) in Yong'amri showed the same growth patterns, indicating the contemporaneousness of these sites. The results disagree with the opinion of the excavators, who believe that these sites in Yong'amri belong to different time spans because of the different styles of the artifacts excavated. In the Wasuri relic, the samples showed same tree-ring patterns only within one habitation site (no.26). This study suggests high potentials of tree-ring dating for the charcoals or carbonized woods, the most common wood materials found in prehistoric sites, by providing relative dates among and within sites. Tree-ring data obtained in prehistoric sites can be used to build long absolute-chronologies in the future.
