The advancements in science technology gave birth to a new medium called the computer. Communications using the computer have already settled down deep in the lives of so many people today. In particular, writing with a word processor is one of the essential elements in daily life. In addition, the sea of information called the Internet takes a critical position in human thinking and provides a range of materials for writing. With the changes to the language environment and the increasingly diverse means of communication, the learners are asked to cultivate the abilities not only to manipulate new media, but also to collect, assess, and process large amounts of information, critically accept new media, and express to the liking of the audience. In order to fulfill those goals, they need to systematically organize educational contents fit for the new language environment and search for educational methods fit for the educational contents. Understanding that there was a need for the organization of new educational contents according to new media, this study set out to analyze the characteristics of computer writing by elementary school students in the Internet environment. For theoretical backgrounds, the investigator reviewed the characteristics and types of computer writing and considered the education of computer writing in a critical manner by examining the status and problems of computer writing in the revised Korean Curriculum of 2007 that was supposed to emphasize media. I tried to make multilateral approaches including interview, analysis of writing processes, and analysis of results since the subjects were elementary school students. Especially I recorded the entire process of computer writing for observation and analysis purposes. Chapter IV analyzed the characteristics of computer writing among elementary school students through interviews. Section 2 and 3 mentioned the process and results of their computer writing and analyzed the characteristics. And Section 4 reviewed the influential factors on their computer writing. Based on the analysis results, I offered some educational implications in the area of selection of educational contents and teaching and learning methods for computer writing. The discussions led to a finding that a new medium called the computer could be a new instrument of writing to elementary school students who were sensitive to the language environment and have impacts on their cognitive process involved in writing. The significance of the study can be found in that it investigated computer writing of elementary school students, took diverse approaches including interview, process analysis, and result analysis, and conducted an empirical study according to qualitative analysis instead of the conventional deductive research. In future study, they will hopefully take affective approaches including the writer's motivation and interest and thus add more educational values to computer writing.
