이광수 초기 ‘민족’ 관념의 형성과 문학적 실천

국문 초록

이 글은 이광수의 문학 활동 초기를 대상으로 이광수의 문학적 행위의 중심에 있었던 글쓰기와 ‘민족’ 관념의 내포 형성의 관계를 밝히는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 이광수의 생애를 다룬 기존의 논의에서, 이광수 문학의 근원적 동기는 고아－됨에 있었다. 고아로서 갖게 되는 결핍감을 대리 보충하려는 욕망으로 이광수의 삶과 문학의 연결고리를 찾았던 것이다. 이에 반하여 이 글은 이광수가 썼던 자서전적인 글들과 초기의 소설들을 중심으로 그의 근원적 동기에는 피동적인 고아－됨에서 벗어나 적극적으로 고아－되기를 실천하려는 세대 분리의 욕구가 있다는 것을 지적하였다. 이러한 세대 분리의 욕구는 독자에게도 새로운 민족 구성을 위해 문자 구성의 측면이나 인간 본성의 측면, 역사 해석의 측면에서 새로운 관점을 제기하는 ‘민족’ 관념 내포의 변동을 요구하는 방향을 취했다. 그 중에서 가장 중요한 것은 문자의 측면이다. 이광수는 처음부터 한글 전용론을 주장했고 이를 여러 차원에서 실험하였다. 또한 인간 본성의 측면에서는 관습적인 인간에 대립하는 자연적 인간을 내세워 과거의 인간 사유방식에 의문을 제기하고 새로운 인간상을 제시했다. 마지막으로 역사에 대한 논의에서는 바로 이전의 조선과 단절하고 상고 시대의 정신적 주체성과 결합하려는 것이다. 상고 시대의 정신적 주체성과 결합하는 데 정신생활의 기반인 종교적․철학적 면모는 찾을 수 없다. 짐작으로 존재하는 이러한 빈 내용 속에서 오직 중요한 것으로 사유되는 것이 한글로 글을 쓰는 행위이다. 이렇게 고아－되기에서 세대 단절론을 중심으로 한 이광수의 ‘민족’ 관념은 근대성을 담을 수 있는 그릇인 민족 언어를 강조한다. 이광수의 논의는 한글이 갖는 민족 정통성과 근대 의식을 연결지어 회귀적 민족 재구성이 아닌, 근대 의식을 내포하면서 동시에 공허함과 숭고함을 동시적 속성으로 가진 ‘민족’ 관념을 통해 새로운 상징질서의 도래를 가속화할 수 있었던 것이다.

영문 초록

This thesis is for the purpose of making clear the connection of forming the connotation in the idea of ‘nation’ in LEE KWANG-SU’s early literary act. In the stereotype of discussion about LEE KWANG-SU’s life, the original motive in his literature is the ‘being-orphan’. Those find a desire to replace the lack of being orphan for a coupling device of his life and literature. In other side, with his writing like an autobiography and early his writings as the central figure, this point out a desire of seperating between the old and new generation to become an orphan positively, not to become an orphan passive in the original motive of his writing. The desire of seperating between the old and new generation presents a new viewpoint to the reader public from the side of constructing “ecriture” and the human nature and the history analysis, for a reforming ‘nation’. The most important is the side of “ecriture” among these sides. LEE KWANG-SU insisted an only use for Korean language and experimented it in many ways. And in the side of the human nature, he present “homme de la homme” against “l’homme de l’homme” and raised doubts of the thinking ways. At the last one, in the side of history analysis, he tried to breake the relation of Chosun and combine a subjectivity of ancient ages. But there is not a religion or philosophical aspect to be a basis of spritual force to combine with subjectivity of ancient ages. The signified is an arbitrariness and the only important thing is to write in Korean language. The his idea of ‘nation’ for the seperating of generation and ‘becoming-orphan’ emphasize the national language as ways to express a modernity. He connected a national legitimacy and a modern conciousness. It has the idea of ‘nation’ with sublime and emptiness simultaneously, and made more speedy to come the symbolic order.
