영문 초록

  The spectrum ranging from knives and guns through locomotives and chain saws to motorcars and an aerospace company in The Last of the Mohicans, "The Bear" and The Crying of Lot 49 represents the track of technological developments that were made despite the basic drive of the new country for the pastoral ideal. It can be observed from the track that the wilderness became reduced as technology got more powerful. The Last of the Mohicans depicts the fort as a single civilized space distinct from the wide wilderness, which demonstrates that the wilderness overwhelms the civilization in the stage of The Last of the Mohicans. "The Bear" delineates the transition from wilderness to civilization. The text portrays the process by which nature gets destroyed by human forces. The main plots of The Crying of Lot 49 are set in a city artificially planned as a kind of transistor radio circuit. The Yoyodyne factory in the center of the city symbolizes the destructive force of sameness and artificially structured order.
  In proportion to the development of technology, the imbalance between those possessing the technological power and those lacking it becomes worse, along with the destruction of the wilderness. In The Last of the Mohicans, Chingachgook and Uncas have knives and tomahawks, whereas the British and French have guns. The technological1y dispossessed people like American Indians are fated to fall like autumn leaves. In "The Bear", the intrusion of the locomotives into the wilderness brings about the death of Sam Fathers, a native American, as well as of Old Ben, a wild bear. Native Americans are dispossessed and reduced to the Other. In The Crying of Lot 49, those excluded from the power structure are seen to be "deserted" into a "shadow-state" behind the surface of the Republic. Tristero as the representative of the Other constructs the underground system called WASTE to counter the dominating structure. Besides the literal meaning, WAS1E can be interpreted as "We Await Silent Tristero"s Empire," which hints at the possibility of the "deserted" Others being restored as beneficiaries of technology. The work, however, ends without any sure promise, which suggests that the problems caused by technology cannot be solved by the transition of power from the technologically dispossessed into the technologically advantaged.
