국문 초록

  이 연구에서는 사교육 수요를 심층적으로 분석하기 위해서 다음과 같은 연구문제를 설정하였다. 첫째, 사교육 수요를 결정하는 주된 요인은 무엇인가? 둘째, 사교육 수요는 어떠한 속성(현재지향적 학습보충, 미래지향적 투자)을 갖는 가? 셋째, 사교육 수요결정 요인은 학생과 학부모에 따라 차이가 있는가? 이 연구를 위해서 5개 교육청산하의 총 32개 고등학교에 재학 중인 2학년 학생과 학부모를 대상으로 2007년 6월에 설문조사를 실시하였다. 분석방법으로는 학생수준과 학교 수준변수를 통합적으로 분석하기 위해서 위계적 선형모형(Hierachical Linear Model)을 적용하였다.
  연구 결과, 학생들의 경우, 사회경제적 배경이 좋을수록, 모의고사성적이 높을 수록, 그리고 희망대학 수준이 높을수록 통계적으로 유의미한 수준으로 사교육비를 많이 지출하는 것으로 나타났다. 반면에, 학부모들의 경우 자녀에 대한 희망 대학수준 보다 장기적인 교육기대 수준이 높을수록 사교육비를 많이 지출하는 것이 통계적으로 유의미하게 나타났다. 학생 수준의 변수를 통제한 후에도 ‘학교 수준’의 평균 사회경제적 지위와 평균 모의고사 성적이 높을수록 사교육비 지출에 차이가 있었다. 이와 같이 사교육이 학습보충 뿐만 아니라 미래투자로서의 속성을 가지며, 사교육 투자에 있어서 빈부격차가 있음을 보여주는 연구결과는 향후 사교육 대책 마련에 고려되어야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

  This study analysed the demand for and cost of private education in Korea. The research questions addressed were 1. what are major factors determining the private education demands? 2. What are the characteristics of the private education demands (present-oriented learning supplement, future-oriented investment strategy)?
  Research team conducted (June, 2007) a questionnaire survey of 24 humanities high schools and 8 vocational high schools in Seoul, Kyonggi-Do, Cholla-Do and Kyungsang-Do area. Both students and their parents were sampled to investigate students private learning activities in and after school. Student-level and school-level information were collected, and analyzed with Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) method. Major results of the study are presented as below.
  The result of the analysis confirmed that there are large differences in the level of private education costs borne by students among schools. It implies that the demands and level of investment on private learning activities vary depending on students" SES and academic performance. It is interesting that higher achieving students appear to receive more private education programs than lower achieving ones. Also, the results indicate that, rather than contrary to common belief, parents spend more money on private education programs considering longer educational aspirations for their children than on immediate supplement to raise the performance(grades) in schools for admission into preferred universities. Parents tend to bear more expenditures on private education activities of their children, the higher their expectations on their children"s education attainment level.
