현대 한국불교의 현황과 전망

국문 초록

  현재 불교의 상황은 외형적으로 드러난 것만큼 안정적이거나 희망적이라 말할 수 없다. 관성적인 신앙의 형태에서 벗어나 있지 않으며, 종교 환경은 호전되었지만 현대사회의 대중이 원하는 종교의 정보나 신앙형태를 제시하고 있지 못하다. 전통이 깊은 만큼 그 관성에 의해 교세를 유지하고 있지만 종교적 정체성, 신도의 교육, 종교지도자의 교육, 관리시스템, 신도관의 소통 및 결속력 확보 등에 여러 분야에서 문제점을 드러내고 있다.
  더불어 외부환경의 변화는 불교계 발전에 부정적인 영향만을 끼치고 있지는 않으며, 오히려 불교계에 순기능적인 압력 요인으로 작용하기도 한다. 개신교나 천주교의 선교방법이 불교계에 차용되거나 영향을 미치는 것이 그렇다.
  기타 매스컴, 인터넷, 출판, 문화 등의 발전은 불교계의 발전을 촉진하는 요인이 되리라 본다. 종단 내부 갈등이 해소되고, 각 종단의 역량을 외부로 돌릴 수 있다면 불교계는 더욱 발전할 수 있을 것으로 본다. 다만 몇 가지 전제 조건이 구비되어야 할 것이다. 우선 출가자들의 교육 제도들 현대사회에 맞도록 개선해야 한다. 둘째 각 종단의 정체성을 분명하게 확립해야 한다. 현재처럼 종명과 무관하게 정체성이 떨어진다면 그 생명력이 연장될 수 없다. 셋째 각 종단의 관리시스템이 현대화, 체계화, 제도화 되어야 한다. 넷째 종단 자체 내부의 현황에 대한 통계 자료가 정확해야 한다.

영문 초록

  Since independence, Korea-Buddhism has met change and adaptation, and confusion and hardship. If so, we may ask where the Korea-Buddhism is. Here, I would like to answer the question with data mostly getting from the National Statistical Office, and the Ministry of culture and tourism.
  According to the ministry of culture and tourism in 2002, Korea-Buddhism has more than 150 fraternities. Nowadays, experts pronounce more than 200 fraternities are jumbled. However, if categorizing fraternities, fraternities may divide into five category, such as orders of chan, orders of lotus tiantai, orders of metheya, orders of pureland, etc.
  If analyzing fraternities by the total number of Buddhist in Korea, eastregion has more Buddhist than westregion.
  Korea-Buddhism which has had no interest in the public has been changed since 1990. After reinvigorating the Korea-Buddhism press and broadcasting, there have too many publications in Korea. After that, Korea-Buddhism has begun to recognize the important of social welfare and operate or build many number of welfare facilities. Various welfare activities(such as nursing home, hospital, general welfare facility, rehabilitation facility, silver town, and etc.) are developed. Now those facilities are more than 555. Beside that, more than 338 number of prekindergarten and 361 number of cultural program are operating.
  Revitalizing Buddhism makes establishing and operating the numbers of Buddhist group. Buddhist groups by function and work place and a chorus and culture and art groups led by temple are increasing. With tendency of focusing on well-being and culture, staying in temple and activities for experiencing ecology are increasing.
  The other side of Korea-Buddhism changing after 1990 comes with requesting of the public and recognizing the Korea-Buddhism status of educated Buddhist priesthood in 70’s and 80’s. However, the prospect of Korea-Buddhism will not be an optimistic view. When Korea-Buddhism takes the multi-religion into consideration, the all above-mentioned activities are results for adopting and maintaining.
  According to data from the National Statistical Office, we can see Korea-Buddhism is inferior in numbers at especially the metropolitan and suburbs.
  For turning the tables, Korea-Buddhism should have to try to make identity and stability of the inside of the Korea-Buddhism body. Furthermore it is needed the education of apprentice and believer, and new management system of the Korea-Buddhism body. Too many fraternities may come from the uncertainty of identity.
  Not only adopting the changing of external environment but also minimizing inside conflicts are needed.
