高麗時代 護持佛 摩利支天像에 대한 고찰

국문 초록

  고려시대에는 불교가 성행하였고 밀교의식도 활발하여 국가적인 차원의 밀교도량이 많이 설행되었다. 정토와 천태, 선종에도 밀교적인 요소가 깊이 뿌리내리고 있었다고 알려져 있다. 밀교의 여러 존상 가운데 마리지천상은 전란과 여행길을 보호하여 안전을 지켜주며 여러 종류의 고난에서 구해준다는 신이다. ？？고려사？？에는 국가적으로 마리지천 도량이 설행되었다는 기록이 전하고 있으나 실제로 마리지천에 대한 개인들의 신앙에 대해서는 알 수가 없었다. 현존하는 마리지천의 小像들은 3cm가 조금 넘는 매우 작은 크기로 보아서 옷 속에 넣고 다니는 호지불의 용도로 제작되었다고 생각되는데, 북송대에 번역된『佛說大摩利支菩薩經』된다. 그런데 이 상들은 경전에 수록된 도상의궤에 따른 1면 2비, 3면 6비, 3면 8비가 아닌 1면 6비의 도상을 보이고 있어 고려사회의 정서에 맞추어 적절히 도상의 변용이 이루어졌던 것으로 생각되는데 이를 통해 고려시대 불교미술의 독창적인 면을 엿볼 수 있다. 또한 관음보살과 나란히 배치된 병존상도 있어 전통적인 관음신앙과 함께 밀교적인 마리지천이 함께 신앙되었던 상황을 알 수 있다. 즉, 이 마리지천상들은 불교미술사적인 측면에서 뿐 아니라 고려시대 불교의 신앙양태를 알려준다는 점에서 귀중한 작품이라고 생각된다.

영문 초록

  This paper investigates gold-plated silver amulets of Mar？ci(摩利支天)from the late Goryeo period. These images have crowns decorated with a stupa in its center and six arms, whose hands hold sutra, leaf of bodhi-tree, bow, vajra, sword, and cudgel, seated on a pedestal supported by the back of a wild boar. In the Goryeo period when Buddhism was in full flourish, esoteric Buddhist ceremonies were held with royal support. Textual record exhibits that national ceremonies on Mar？ci were performed at Myotong-sa temple(妙通寺) in the capital, Gaegyung(開京).
  Sutras on Mar？ci say that if anyone bears an image of Mar？ci under his clothes or in his top-knot, Mar？ci will protect him from all kinds of danger, even when he goes into battle or on a long trip. Tiny images of Mar？ci in the collection of the National Museum of Korea and in private collections in Japan show worship of Mar？ci just as written in the sutras. These amulets display one-headed and six-armed Mar？ci, which is different from the iconography of Mar？ci with three-heads and six or eight-arms written in the sutras.
  It is presumed that iconography of Mar？ci was somewhat modified for the cultural atmosphere of Goryeo society. They look friendly and gentle, not as aggressive as Indian Mar？ci images of the Pala period or Chinese images of the Southern Song period, which demonstrate the taste and capability of Goryeo artists in applying textual iconography and foreign models to their own type of images.
