Trends and Problems in a study on <sijipsari norae>. Dongnam Journal of Korean Language & Literature 24. The purpose of this study is to broaden the range of researching <sijipsari norae> that has been roughly regarded as belonging to epic folk songs. For the purpose, this researcher tried to re-classify some songs that have been collectively classified as <sijipsari norae>, and analyze and take a new view on previous studies and findings about those songs.
Many researchers have been continuously paying attention to <sijipsari norae>, already classified as a sub-style of epic folk song, since Cho Dong Il"s A Study on Epic Folk Songs . There have been enough discussions about researching folk song as a whole. But there have been few discussions about the trends and new directions of researching <sijipsari norae> only.
Assuming that partial researchers are prerequisite for a comprehensive research, <sijipsari norae> is still less comprehensively understood. Previous studies about <sijipsari norae> have in most cases defined the work as a sub-style of epic folk song. Yet, there are stopless debates over which genre the above song belongs to. In a similar vein, there have been lots of studies in which whether lyric or epic, all folk songs collectively classified as <sijipsari norae> were equally treated. In this study, the researcher attempted to reconsider already defined conceptual relationships between "epic folk song" and <sijipsari norae> prior to investigating current trends of researching the latter. Folk songs can be classified into three sub-genres, lyric, epic and didactic folk songs according to their styles and into another threes, folk songs for labor, rite and amusement according to their functions. Thus "epic folk song" is a sort of genre itself. Again, <sijipsari norae> has been classified as epic folk song. B t in fact, <sijipsari norae> should be classified based on its attributes, not based on genres as classified above. In other words, <sijipsari norae> can"t be always regarded as one of epic folk songs because it is both lyric and epic. Of course, this study does not intend to re-establish existing normal theories of genre. Instead, the study points out that out of folk songs collectively titled <sijipsari norae>, some are more lyric and others are more epic, so out of the folk songs, those already classified as "epic folk song" need to be reclassified.
This study was developed in the following procedure. First, the researcher investigated the previous trends and findings of researching <sijipsari norae>
Second, the researcher examined correlations between the above genres of <sijipsari norae> and narrations whose motive is same as that of the folk song, determining differences among those narrations in accordance with those genres.
Third, the researcher collected and recorded actual works of <sijipsari norae> and investigated in detail and individually those works and their informants" lives, finding women"s consciousness common in the works.
