국문 초록

  이제현은 당시의 시ㆍ문(詩文) 공부 중심의 겉만 화려하게 장식하는 학문세계가 아니라 유학 경전 중심과 오륜 등의 실천 윤리 중심의 실질적이고 실용적인 학문 세계를 통하여 사회 현실의 제반 문제들을 타개해 나갔다. 이런 과정에서 그는 성리학을 전통 유학과 질적으로 다른 성격의 학문이 아니라 전통 유학을 보강하는 기능으로 받아들였다. 특히 그가 강조한 실학(實學)은 이론적이고 사변적인 성리학보다도 실용적이며 유익한 학문으로, 즉 사회 현실의 불합리한 모순들을 타개함에 있어서 새로운 시대로의 전환을 모색할 수 있다는 하나의 근거로 이해되었다. 결국 그는 이러한 실학에 근거한 학문 세계에서 백성의 안위와 국가의 주권 회복의 실현을 자신의 최종 목표로 설정하고, 사회 전반에 걸친 개혁 의지를 표명해 나갔다.

영문 초록

  Lee Jae-hyun solved the various problems of social actuality through substantial and practical the learning world. The world was not pretensical learning world centering around the existing poetry and prose but learning world centering around practical ethics of Confucianism Scripture and the Five moral disciplines in Human Reations.(五倫) From this point of view, Sung Confucianism(性理學) could not be accepted as a learning of qualitatively different character with the traditional Confucianism but a function which reinforces the traditional Confucianism. Therefore, Practical Learning(實學) that he emphasized was comprehended more a practical and beneficial learning, namely one ground which it will be able to grope new a change of direction in solving the various problems of social actuality than the theoretical and speculative Sung Confucianism. Finally, based on a view of learning of Practical Learning(實學), he established a realization of the welfare of people and the sovereignty recovery of nation with final goal of oneself and expressed a reform will in the social whole.
