영문 초록

  This paper examines three constructions involving wh-wh or wh-QP interactions that have multiple-pair or pair-list interpretation: (ⅰ) the wh₁ - wh₂; (ⅱ) the wh₂ -wh₁ - t₂; (ⅲ) the wh, - QP - t₁ constructions. We argue that the moved wh-phrase in the first construction differs from that in the second and third constructions in terms of interpretation and sensitivity to an island condition. In particular, the moved wh-phrase in the first construction behaves like an universal quantifier (Comovski (1989)) and has only its phi-features reconstructed to its copy trace position without being subject to an island condition. On the other hand, the moved wh-phrase in the second and third constructions plays a role as a functional variable (Hornstein (1995)) and has its restriction part reconstructed to its copy trace position, being susceptible to an island condition. We also argue, contrary to Pesetsky (2000), that overt wh-movement has to be distinguished from covert wh-movement, on the basis of their contrast in weak island effects.
