국문 초록

  이글에서는 역사과가 향후 궁극적으로 교과로 독립하기 위해 역사교육의 목표와 내용 체계를 바로잡고 구체화해야 한다는 입장 하에 독립교과의 경험을 가졌던 국사 교육에서 지금까지 무엇을 가르쳐 왔는가를 검토하면서, 특히 4차 교육과정기 중등 국사 교과서에 국사과 교육과정이 어떻게 반영되었는지, 그 내용상의 특성은 무엇인지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 3차 교육과정기에 국사과가 독립된 이후 4차 교육과정기에도 국민정신 교육을 강화한다는 국가교육의 기본 방향에 따라 국사과의 교과 독립이 유지되는 가운데 민족 주체성의 확립과 민족사관의 정립이라는 교육 목표가 계속 강조되는 한편, 역사교육 학계의 학문적 발전에 따라서 역사적 사고력의 함양을 강조하기 시작하는 긍정적인 변화가 있었다. 반면에 4차 교육과정기에는 종전처럼 민족사관 교육을 지향했지만, 실제로 그 비중이 이전 시기에 비해 줄어드는 변화도 나타났다. 이 때 중요하게 부각된 것은 ‘시련과 극복’ 중심의 근현대사 교육이었다. 국사과 교육과정에서는 이것을 강조하면서 현대 사회의 국내외적 상황에 대처하는 능력을 키우기 위해서라고 목표를 내세웠지만, 실제로 4차 국사 교과서의 근현대사 서술은 유신체제 이후 반공과 독재 체제의 정당성을 강조하기 위해 박정희 정권이 시도하고 강화했던 틀을 계승하고‘발전’시키는 것이었다. 따라서 이러한 체제순응적 국사교육은 1980년대 중반 이후 사회민주화가 급속히 전개되면서 역사학계와 역사교육계에 의해 극복 대상이 되어야 했다.

영문 초록

  In this article, I intended to examine the characteristics of middle school Korean History textbook during the 4th educational period, in order to determine whether the national agenda on history education actually had an influence on the contents of Korean history textbook.
  The contents of the middle school Korean history textbook during 4th educational period maintained focusing on the nationalistic approach, in order to facilitate the nationalist agenda that was widespread in South Korea at that time.
  The existence of a separate course as Korean history gained its validity for the nationalist agenda as well. The nationalistic history education approach was emphasized during the 4th educational period, and yet the importance throughout the entire course gradually decreased teaching students how to think about historical matters on their own started gaining importance.
  The focus was on "Suffering and Overcoming" of the modern history of South Korea.The aim of modern Korean history education was said to help students learn how to make a reflective decision based on their past, for the contemporary political struggle of East Asia. However, truth be told, the aim was always to emphasize the validity of the tyrannical Park Chung-hee regime.
  And yet, such complacent approach toward nationalistic Korean history education has waned since the peak during the 4th educational period, and alternative approaches to overcome shortcomings of the previous history education, owing to newly-arisen socialist-democratic waves.
