The Buddha and Aaron Beck put a heavy emphasis on the dysfunction of thoughts. The Buddha teaches that people are suffering thinking of unwholesome thoughts while Aaron Beck diagnoses that faulty negative thoughts cause mental disorders.
In the Madhupindika Sutta, the Buddha analyses negative process of thinking. "The meeting of three(eye, forms, eye-consciousness) is contact. With contact as condition there is feeling. What one feels, that one perceives. What one perceives, that one thinks about. What one thinks about, that one mentally proliferates. With what one mentally proliferates as the source, perceptions and notions tinged by mental proliferation beset a man."
Aaron Beck"s Cognitive Therapy assumes that a patient"s erroneous cognitions causes him sufferings. The distorted cognitions include arbitrary inference, selective abstraction, over-generalization, magnification and minimization, personalization, dichotomous thinking and so forth.
In the Vittakasanthana Sutta the Buddha proscribes the five ways to remove distracting thoughts: ① giving attention to wholesome thoughts ② examining the danger in unwholesome thoughts ③ ignoring unwholesome thoughts ④ stilling the thought formation of unwholesome thoughts ⑤ beating down unwholesome thoughts.
According to Aaron Beck"s Cognitive Therapy, correction of distorted thoughts can lead to clinical improvement of a patient. The patient should become aware of his cognitive distortions. By finding and correcting cognitive errors in automatic thinking, intermediate beliefs, core beliefs, a patient becomes free from mental disorders.
