조선시대 화원(畵員)의 예술관과 형성배경에 관한 고찰

국문 초록

  이 논문은 조선 시대 직업화가인 화원의 예술관에 관한 것이다. 필자는 화원과 관련된 역사적 자료로 그들의 예술관을 분석하여 그것이 절대적 권력의 후원자이자 고용주인 왕과 화원의 헤게모니 안에서 형성되었음을 주지하고자 한다. 왕은 도화서를 이용해 화원을 교육하고 관리하면서 화원에게 공리적 효용성과 표현의 사실성 등을 예술관으로 요구하였고 이는 그들이 예술관 형성의 배경이 되었다. 화원의 예술관을 왕과의 관계를 통해 분석한 필자의 연구는 기존의 제도사와 작가의 개인적 예술론에 편향된 연구를 더욱 풍성하게 함과 동시에 미술 교육 기관으로서의 도화서의 기능을 재평가하는 계기가 될 것이다. 더불어 천기(賤技) 사상의 영향으로 저평가된 화원의 예술관을 예술의 사회적 기능에 초점을 둠으로서 문인의 수기적(修己的) 예술관과 대등한 자리로 매김 하고자 한다.

영문 초록

  This thesis is about the Hwa-won(畵員)’s view of art as the occupational painter in Chosun Dynasty. Hwa-won’s art of view is formated by the king who is the art patron and the employer of them. They were educated the public efficacy of art, the realistic expression by the Do-hwa-so(圖畵署: Bureau of Painting). Do-hwa-so as the institute of art cultivated painters which not only made up portions of the government organization, but also assured the painters a means of livelihood. However the most important purpose of its establishment was for the efficient national operation by the enlightenment paintings. Therefore it cultivated the painters by the king’s view of art which is based on the public efficacy of art. Compare to Mon-in(文人)’s view of art which is for culturing self(修己), the Hwa-won’s view of art has been under-estimated because of the social function of art. The social function of art is valuable as much as the individual function of art, therefore the Hwa-won’s view of art can be revaluated as important as Mon-in(文人)’s view of art. Also this research which is about the Hwa-won’s art of view based on Hwa-won and king’s hegemonies give us the opportunity to revaluate not only the Do-hwa-so as art educational institution, but also Hwa-won as occupational painter.
