‘효(孝) 실천’과 그 현대적 변용의 문제 - 하버마스(Habermas)의 ‘현대비판에 대한 담론’을 중심으로

국문 초록

  ‘효’의 관념은 동아시아 세계에 매우 친숙하다. 그것은 동아시아인들의 내재적 심층의식으로 자리잡고 내면적 도덕의 한 축을 이루고 외재적 규범의 주요 요소를 만들었다.
  이러한 까닭에 ‘효’에 대한 개념적 이해는 ‘실천’이라는 매개를 통해서만이 가능하다. 그러나 ‘효 실천’은 그 역사적 전개 안에서 때로는 형식주의로 빠지거나, 혹은 정치적 이데올로기로 오용되었다. 그러한 부정적 영향은 오늘날까지 그 흔적을 한국사회 곳곳에 남겨 놓고 있다. 특히 독재정치 권력에 부재했던 혹은 미비한 정당성 창출을 위해 ‘효 실천’을 악용했던 사례는 효 그 자체의 사회적 기능과 효과를 지극히 확대하거나 축소하는 결과로 나타났다. 그런 이유로 해서 오늘날 현대인의 효 규범의식의 변화에 맞추어 ‘효 실천’은 제자리를 찾지 못하고 있다. 그러한 결과의 하나로 현재의 ‘효 실천’ 개념은 후기 현대의 가족구조 변동에 적응치 못하는 사회의 구조적 지체 현상의 한 원인으로 의심받게 되었다. 물론 ‘아시아적 가치’에 대한 담론은 전통의 덕목들이 ‘어떻게 현대화되어야 하는가’에 대한 논의의 장을 열어 놓았지만, 아직도 ‘효실천’이 현대적 가치, 이념, 규범 등으로 정당화되기에는 더 많은 논의가 필요할 것으로 보인다.
  ‘효 실천’의 현대적 변용의 과제는 무엇보다 먼저 독자적 실천영역을 구축해야 할 것이다. 그러한 전략의 조건은 최소한의 국가권력을 통해 전통으로부터의 ‘효 실천’을 오늘에 매개시킬 수 있는 지속적인 해석의 보장이 전제되어야 한다.

영문 초록

  The concept of filial piety is well-known in the world of East Asia.
  It is because this concept resides as a deep consciousness, it establishes an axis of the internal morality, and becomes the important element of external norm in the East Asian. For this reason to understand the concept of the filial piety is possible only through the medium of so called praxis.
  However, the praxis of filial piety fell into formalism or misused as a political ideology in its historical development. Even today such a negative influence leaves traces in Korean society in many ways. Especially in order to establish the justification which is absent or needed in the despotic regimes the misused cases of ‘the praxis of filial piety’ turned out to be extremely extending or decreasing the social function and effect of filial piety itself. For that reason the praxis of filial piety is not found right place corresponding to the conceptual changes of filial piety of our contemporaries. As one of the results the present concept of ‘the praxis of filial piety’ is in doubt whether it is one of the causes of structural dilatory phenomena in society which is out of accord with the change of post modern familial structure. Although the dialogue about ‘the Asian value" has opened the room for the discussion about how to modernize the traditional virtues, still it seems that more discussions are needed for the praxis of filial piety to be justified as a modern value, ideology, and norm.
  Above all at first the task of modernizing the praxis of filial piety should establish the independent field of praxis. The precondition for this goal is required to guarantee the continual interpretation to mediate the praxis of filial piety from the tradition to the present through the minimal national authority.
