분단의 갈등과 화해의 논리 - 윤흥길의 분단소설을 중심으로

영문 초록

  This study examined the characteristics of Yoon, Heung Gil"s novels on the division of Korea with emphasis on his awareness and solutions. I believed that awareness cannot be separated from solutions. Awareness and solution of division in Yoon"s novels on division are based on two aspects. First, it is the awareness that the conflict and wound of division are disasters and craze that go beyond the capacity of individuals. To show this awareness, his novels from the 1970s, including 「Rainy Season」, tells the story through the eyes of children. He intended to talk about the shocking experiences and scars from the childhood.
  Possible solutions that relate to this awareness include emotional convergence based on blood relations. The shamanistic worldview that made the two grandmothers in 「Rainy Season」 reconcile or the main character"s acceptance as a member of his clan through various hardships in 「When Does the Rainbow Appear」 are examples of emotional convergence based on blood relations. However, such emotional sharing is not realistic because it requires special conditions. Considering that novel writers did not have the freedom to choose their themes under the forceful anti-communist social system, however, it was one of few possible solutions which novels on division could adopt.
  Second, it is the conflict and confrontation between older and younger generations caused by the unfinished war as shown in 『Sickle』, a long novel from the 1990s. Although division has been present for over 30 years, an ordinary office worker in his 30s and his family is threatened by his biological father whom he does not even know. In this novel, division is described as something that ‘constantly intervenes with our destiny, restricts our thoughts and actions, and viciously killing our nationalist pride.’
  The solution based on this awareness is the subjective acceptance of reality which is facing the problem of division even though its cause and conflicts are not directly related to me and the ideology of reconciliation which is sharing one another"s wounds and pain rather than pursuing revenge or rewards for the pain. Some may criticize that this type of solution is too cliched in many Korean novels on division. This is the ongoing assignment of Yoon and Korea"s literature.
